Review
"Danielou's books are remarkable for their clarity, scholarship, and uninhibited celebration of erotic and mystical ecstasy." (Interview Magazine)"Gods of Love and Ecstasy makes compelling reading with so much information on the role played by gods and goddesses, revealing the theological complexity of this ancient cult. This book also includes many references and sources along with a fascinating chronological chart dating back to 15,000 BC. Highly recommended!" (Jane Lee, New Dawn, May-June 2002)"While written nearly thirty years ago, the message of Gods of Love and Ecstasy is more critical today than ever, as it points the way towards reestablishing our links to the energies these archetypes represent, and their power in the material world." (The Institute of Hermetic Studies, Dec 2007)

I bought this book hoping for much more than it offers. Let's say you are looking for an analysis of Dionysus and Shiva, but instead you get flat information. Example: The Puranas (Ancient Chronicles) are enormous texts, rather similar to the bible, in which are transcribed and summarized oral traditions stretching back to the far distant past." Or this: "The Agamas (Traditions) explain the rules of behaviour of the Shivaite sects, referring to traditions existing since time immemorial." Can you imagine hundreds of pages of this flat prose? If you can't, read this book. You'll geta full idea. In other words, this book supplies flat, dull information but no engaging interpretation of what Dionysus or Shiva are really about, what they might have to say to moderns or why they are so fascinating--these questions are not addressed in this book. Or if you like pompous prose, this is for you. Example: "Since the beginning of urban civilization, religious phenomena among sedentary people have been manifested and established in two opposed and contradictory forms. The first is tied to the world of nature, the second to the organization of communal city life." I am not sure why I find this prose so droningly dull, but I do. What I'll put this book in the Kiwanis bag for charity resale.
Very good book on Shiva, Hinduism, Dionysus, etc. He's unaware of archetypal psychology and so is therein limited but otherwise a very good read.
yes!
This is a well written document that brings together a number of the world's most important spiritual traditions.
This is an astonishingly learned work by the Indologist whose brother was not only a biblical scholar but the cardinal of Paris. The English title is a trifle sensational next to the bland original and may attract readers unprepared to deal with its thesis. Looking for a hot item for your favorite hot squeeze? I suggest you look elsewhere. But if you want to learn of the substrate underlying religion from India to Greece to Ireland before the Abrahamic faiths, this is a major work..
Having studied religion for many, many years as a personal endevour, i found this book to be both informative, exact, but also lively and very entertaining to read. While i can not say that my research has gone to the same depths as the author, i did make the exact same conclusion as he does: namely that Shiva is the original deity.I began my studes as a christan all those years ago. I have studied the egyptian religion, the greek religion and many others - but the shock came when i realized that the God of the old testament can be none other than Shiva (with rudra being represented as the pillar of fire). It was thus no shock to find Dionysus to be very popular in the "holy land", and even less surpricing to learn that the cross actually comes from the cult of Dionysus. It is further my conclusion that advocates such as Paul of Tarsus (saint paul) became christian (or actually dionysian) because he understood that "this is the original religion". To bad they (the christians) screwed it up.The book is worth every penny.
The author spent decades immersed in the Shaivaite tradition while living and studying in India. His knowledge and understanding of ancient cultures is profound. The sterile, exoteric, outer forms of "city religion" with it's man made laws (as opposed to Nature's laws), devoted to maintaining material goods, which pervade the world nowadays have their roots in much deeper and darker pagan soil. The inner, esoteric and ecstatic traditions known to the ancients are given a broad cultural and spiritual analysis here with the keen insight of India's spiritual culture and unbroken lines of philosophical traditions. The symbols and their meanings are there for those humans with the eyes willing to see and the heart and head willing to understand. Does Danielou suggest a return to these bacchanalia? It appears we have already started to do so since the "flower power" of the swinging sixties and the all night raves of the 90's. But the mysteries shall ever be mysteries until through initiation we draw nearer to Shiva-Dionysos - wise in the wisdom of all moralities. This book helps to do just that.
Danielou provides insight into the eastern logic behind religion and spirituality. The tolerance of Hinduism and its basic acceptance of individuality is undeniable. what Danielou does is to illustrate the worthy points of the oldest religion in the world.
