“Songs My Mother Taught Me” (1994) is a long autobiography with roughly 470 pages of text and many B&W photos spanning the decades. What’s amazing is that you can jump to any page and find yourself absorbed in whatever tale or philosophizing Brando is relaying. The fascinating verbiage shows that Marlon comprised and dictated the material while Robert Lindsey put it together from there with Brando approving the final edit. The charismatic actor tells his story in a basic chronological fashion. So if you want to learn about his early acting ventures on Broadway they’re in the first quarter of the book whereas if you want to read about his escapades on the set of, say, “Apocalypse Now” they’re near the last quarter (speaking of which, it’s very entertaining, albeit relatively brief). At the appropriate moment he throws in a chapter or two about his connection with AmerIndian causes.Although Marlon refuses to discuss his failed marriages or tragedy-laden kids, he goes into detail about his family life growing up: his two sisters, whom he praises; his mother and her struggles with alcoholism; and his justified anger toward his father. His stories of his year or two at a military school when he was 16-17, along with his summer hoboing & train hopping, are highly entertaining. The story about the theft of the bell tower clapper is hilarious. As usual, Brando offers loads of interesting ideas and viewpoints to ponder. But occasionally he fails to check his info and is speaking out of his you-know-what. For instance, he opines that John Wayne Westerns have done more damage to AmerIndians than the scalp-hunters and bison-slayers of the 1800s ever did. But this simply isn't true; it's myth. For example, John Ford’s cavalry trilogy from 1948-1950 utilized real AmerIndians for the cast and offered a very respectful portrayal, particularly “Fort Apache.” Watch those movies and see for yourself. Other Westerns from around that time period where also respectful of the AmerIndian, e.g. “Buffalo Bill” (1944) and “Broken Arrow” (1950). You’ll notice, by the way, that I didn’t refer to the AmerIndians as “Native Americans”; that’s because these people as a race are not genuinely native to the Americas, they emigrated from Asia. They’re just earlier settlers than Newer Americans. Here’s another example of BS. He details his numerous adulteries / fornications with Hollywood wives & so forth, and admittedly they’re often amusing, but they tend to make you lose respect for him. Like Kirk Douglas, he defends his infidelities using pseudoscientific babble about the male DNA which supposedly gave him no choice concerning his actions. Gee, ya think this might be what the marriage vows are for?Unsurprisingly, Marlon is intelligent, frank, transparent, fun, humorous, philosophical and brooding appropriate to the topic addressed and sometimes all-rolled-into-one. He also isn’t bitter and never berates his critics. He gives people the right to make false or ignorant judgments about him.For instance, his detractors denounced him for putting Post-It notes nearby when he was performing; arguing that he was too lazy to memorize his lines, but Brando explained why he did this: He said he noticed that other actors blew all their energy BEFORE filming commenced, pacing the periphery of the sets while memorizing their lines. By the time they got to shoot the actual scene they lost their edge. Brando learned to build-up his mojo for the actual filming of the sequence, which is the most important moment of acting. Rather than rigidly memorizing dialogue word-for-word, he gave the gist of the line in a spontaneous manner, which made it seem more genuine when shot. Say what you will, but this method worked in spades and it’s why he’s known as the greatest actor ever.If you liked Charlton Heston’s autobiography “In the Arena” (1995), this one is as good or better. It’s just different because the two actors are so different; Heston was more conservative while Brando was more liberal, but he certainly wasn’t what we know today as a loony LIEberal, generally speaking. Heston's book is more technically ordered while Brando's is more stream-of-consciousness.GRADE: A

I enjoyed every aspect of this book. Brando lived a fascinating life. There is much in this book on his movie career, and there is also much on many other aspects of his life, in particular his family and his life in the Pacific. He shares a lot of his life philosophy, which is very interesting. I don't agree with all of his political views, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment. Highly recommended.

Marlon Brando is a complex individual with a wide breadth of emotions, undoubtedly why he was such an outstanding actor. Brando was a womanizer, a user, and callous in many of his relationships with women. Rarely a tender moment is expressed. The unusual dichotomy is Brando's sensitivity to the less fortunate and his amazing grasp of geopolitical manipulations and abuses. I was moved by his exceptional understanding of the abuses of power all around, but most specifically in this country. I came away even more depressed when reminded of the abuses by our own government knowing full well how we are manipulated by government propaganda to believe we are not capable of wrong doing. Marlon Brando gives us much more than just the story of his acting career in his insightful autobiography.

This was really a good read. Lots of insight and personal recollections by the man himself. BTW, the Songs my mother taught me as the subtitle of the book must have meant something very special to him.. In fact the songs his mother taught him meant a very great deal to this enigmatic and prolific actor. His sexual encounter with a female in the desert was noteworthy but that was the strangest one I recall. The book is written as if he was sitting there telling you everything. An easy read.

A fairly balanced and in-depth biography of Brando that surprised me. He opens up about multiple subjects with the exception of his wives and children (although he DOES spend a lot of time talking about sex). His childhood and relationships with his parents and siblings are detailed and illuminating. Although he comes across as not really being interested in his acting career, he does cover many aspects that relate to the art and craft of acting and discusses many of his films and fellow actors. He also delves into his personal, religious and political beliefs. A strong supporter of civil rights (especially Native Americans and African Americans), his dedication is impressive and admirable. He also talks a lot about Tetiaroa, the island he purchased in 1967 and transformed into a resort.

I do have to say that I was prompted to read this after reading Rita Moreno's memoir as she mentions him quite a bit in it. Brando's book is gritty, funny, insightful in to the inner man he was. Though he did have someone co-author with him, it did capture the inner essence of who Brando was and what he was about. I really enjoyed it and enjoyed looking through the various photographs included. It gave him a very different picture of the man who now I can see was not only appealing on the eye (in his early years) but inwardly so as well.

Loved this book, it amazed me how deep his thought process, understood his interpretation of life itself. Showed all his vulnerabilities and walked you through his thought process. Book was written so vividly that I felt I was living vicariously through him. Absolutely insightful and very moving, I myself went thru so many emotions while reading this wonderful book. Loved it.

A fantastic, illuminating read. In short: If you want to learn about method acting, the Hollywood system and hear a first-hand account of this deeply troubled but unique, brilliant mind, check it out. He was fascinated by the human condition and psychology in general, which really comes through in this rich autibiography

I recently moved to Northern California and I wanted some guide books to help me explore my new area. I usually love Lonely Planet guide books so I figured I'd get both the California guide book (for when I have a long weekend and can go south) and the Northern California guide book so that I could get a lot more detail for the stuff that is close by and more easy to explore. Both of the books arrived, and I was really excited to start planning trips, but then I started comparing the two books. Low and behold they are the EXACT SAME THING... word for word, chapter for chapter. (The only thing that is changed between the books is the center piece with all the pictures.) The California guide book simply has 5 more chapters that include Southern California. The No.Cal. book is $2.75 cheaper, but I'd say just pay the extra $ to get the 5 more chapters in case you ever want to go to the south as well. The info looks good, I just wish that there were more detail for No. Cal. in the No. Cal. book

I eagerly awaited this new book, but it seems like it was barely updated from the previous version I borrowed from the library. For example, there is no mention of the new SMART train that opened last year that makes it easier to visit some small towns just north of San Francisco. In general, this book is very poor if you're relying on public transit. In Los Angeles, the light rail extension to Santa Monica Pier has been open for two years, but it instead suggests to take a slower bus. Buses between Los Angeles and San Francisco are faster than the train, but it only suggests the Greyhound bus, which leaves from a bus station in the sketchy outskirts of L.A. Megabus and Boltbus have been operating for years and offer a direct ride from L.A.'s Union Station in the city center or Hollywood to downtown San Francisco.I would suggest one uses this book as a starting point for research, then supplement your trip details with more online research.

I purchased this travel guide in the Kindle edition and am glad I did. This book is still the same thorough, insightful guide that I've come to expect from Lonely Planet, but with a whole new dimension. There are links to most of the attractions, businesses and info. sources cited in the book and as long as my Kindle Fire is connected to the web, all I have to do is click to go directly to their web sites for more details and up-to-date information.Additionally, I can expand all the maps included in the guide to zoom in on neighborhoods and streets. The colors are vivid on the Kindle display, which enhances the reading experience for me. I bought this book to help me plan a trip to this region. It is definitely going with me.

I have found that Lonely Planet's travel books vary from one book to another. Several years ago I got one on Arizona. It was 5-stars plus. Excellent. The best. The one on Ireland was so-so. This one was so-so as well. Not much "inside" information. What I got from this book I could have gotten from any other travel book. In fact, I need to get another book because this one fell short. Sorry Lonely Planet, but it did. I counted on you for information I could not get anywhere else and you didn't deliver.

This is a detailed, user-friendly guide that puts a great deal of information at the traveler's fingertips. It breaks the Northern California coast into sections or areas and each section is broken down into towns, things to do, etc. It also gives distances and driving times between different cities and towns. The weblinks are also fun and handy and the travel tips are great. Thanks, Lonely Planet, and thanks, Amazon!

Although it's going a bit upstream in recent years, LP guides are still the best out there and North Cali just did what we needed it to. Maybe adding a chapter on Silicon Valley would be nice and dropping city of Napa (that's just not what I call a invigorated lively and interesting town, sorry :D)

To much writing. No photos o references. I deeply recommend a different book or travel guide.

Used it recently and found it helpful. I had good success with most of the recommendations and appreciated the honesty of the reviews.
