OK in all honesty it is not complete it could have had more but it's really not that bad. It does cover a lot. It covers the whole new Platinum Sinnoh Pokedex witch now goes to 210. In great detail the walk-through covers all the Platinum changes the only thing it doesn't cover is found in the National Pokedex the Pokemon's TM's HM's and Move Tutor list and though Color Shard exchange. Also the National Pokedex only goes up to 492 it doesn't include 493 Arceus. The last thing I noticed is that throughout the book there are parts that have incorrect information. All 'N' all it's still pretty useful.

My 7 year old wanted this for Christmas. I purchased a used copy that arrived in great condition outside of a few corner creases. My kid won't put it down, and is doing all kinds of strange things like resetting the date on his DS to unlock new characters. It is a big heavy book with color pages and lots of info. I'm glad the used copy was in good shape... it's pretty expensive to get a new copy.

The pokemon platinum guide is great it gives you information on everything you could possibly need or want to know it offers strategy's on fighting the gym leaders and the elite four it offers a sinnoh pokedex and a national pokedex it even includes information on an item that allows uyou to keep giritina in his origin form so if you need to know somthing or want to knnow somthing this is the best thing to buy

My husband loves these games and always gets the guide because otherwise you could easily miss some of the side-stories or parts of the game while you're moving through. As with most of these guides it walks through the various areas, discusses the different missions/quests and pokemon you can find. Great for anyone wanting to play the game!

This is a very good resource to have when playing this game. It includes a walkthrough that is sometimes a bit too brief, with exact item locations sometimes a bit hard to find (not labeled on the maps), and the maps can sometimes be a bit small. For me, this is fine, though occasionally annoying. The most helpful parts are the charts for each route that contain the Pokemon that will appear there and at what times and the Pokedex in the back, which contains info on every Pokemon so far (no Black and White, obviously). There is also a section explaining which Pokemon learn which moves (sorted by move!) and how they learn it, useful for breeding weird moves to weird Pokemon (Ex. Flamethrower + Geodude). Another section details item uses and locations. This was as good as I could have expected, if anything a bit better. This book will be very helpful beyond the first play through.

Although there are plenty of books on the design and service histories of English capital ships, this is the only one I know of that describes in-depth the vast industrial machine that created them. Covering the era from 1889 to 1946, this book focuses on the shipyards, marine engineering works, armor plants, and armament factories which constructed 111 battleships and battlecruisers during that period. Rather than combat exploits, this book deals with money, manufacturing, and manpower. Ian Johnston (A Shipyard at War,Clydebank Battlecruisers) is rapidly becoming one of my favorite naval historians, and this is yet another excellent work by him.Granted, this is a pretty esoteric book, but it's exceptionally nicely put together, filled with superb illustrations and detailed insights. As a bit of a shipbuilding geek, I really enjoyed the large number of vintage glass-plate photographs here, along with the excellent shipyard and factory layout maps. There's a huge amount of information contained in the tables, from the price of Orion's 13.5-inch turret ammunition hoists (£48,020) to the number of men employed by the Armstrong Whitworth engine works in 1913 (1,913). There's a lot of really obscure material here that serious naval buffs will eat up. The text is generally well written but somewhat dry, but where this book really excels is in the level of detail. Highlights include the armor and gun manufacturing processes, histories of every shipyard, brief biographies of important figures, photographs of ships and big guns under construction, and insights into the procurement process. There are also excerpts from shipyard logbooks, period advertisements, and a detailed appendix of John Brown's capital ship tenders from 1905 to 1945. You could seriously spend a few hours with this book and only skim the surface."The Battleship Builders" is more sourcebook than narrative, and I can't imagine reading the Kindle version would be terribly enjoyable. There are a large number of tables and photographs which probably wouldn't translate terribly well to the E-book format. Unfortunately, the hardcover is rather small, some of the photographs are wallet-sized, and some of the diagrams are hard to study without a magnifying glass. That aside, this is a very classy reference book and a valuable contribution to the ongoing study of naval archaeology. It's not a "beach read," but it IS definitely full of "good stuff!"

Holy, moley. When it comes to this book the old 'Dragnet' TV show apocryphal line of "Just the facts, Ma'am' is an understatement. 'The Battleship Builders' is jam-packed (Britspeak: chock-a-block) with superlative photographs and facts up the yin-yang, more arcana on its topic than most of us lay readers can hope to absorb. If you're fascinated by the majesty of the great old battlewagons and would like to learn how such vessels' sophisticated mass was formed and assembled, then you must steer a beeline to the Amazon order page.

First rate story of the private ship building companies in Great Britain in the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries that constructed most of the battleships for the Royal Navy fleet. The book includes many photographs of battleships under construction and completed. There are also many photos of the manufacturing and construction of ship components such as the heavy guns and turrets. Each separate ship builder is discussed. Also discussed in detail are the procedures for how large warships were designed and constructed in that era. The heavy industrial effort and development that existed in Great Britain a hundred years ago compared to today is simply amazing.

I would actually give this work a solid 3 1/2 stars.This is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, the myriad period tables and business documents sometimes overwhelmed the text.The conclusions were also a bit buried, but documented well. The real money was made in the armor plate and specialized gun fittings and the huge 1890-1915 building boom in British battleships was unique and unrepeatable after 1915 with barely enough capacity and skilled talent to undertake the much more modest rearming of WW2. The interwoven story of the armament and shipbuilding culture which made impossible the type of mass construction undertaken in the U.S. is also touched on.One of the technical aspects of this work is that all the photos, drawings and tables were present. While a little cumbersome to open, expand and close again it greatly added to appreciation of the story and it would behoove publishers of other works to follow this lead. See my review of Dreadnoughts which underscores this.

Ian Buxton's book is not about naval tactics and battles, admirals and seamanship. It is a well-researched story of the adaptation of Britain's technological and economic power to the design and construction of big warships in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It describes the way in which the Treasury, unable to fund a big expansion of the Navy's own dockyards to build the new designs of battleships, used contracts with the private sector to accomplish the objective. Private firms jockeyed for position to win the contracts, and brought new skills and techniques to the task. Of course, this involved politics as well. Some key technologies were retained in Admiralty control for strategic reasons. Buxton has provided us with a fascinating view of this period of British industrial history.The Battleship Builders complements the magnificent history of the British Navy written about 12 years ago by N.A.M Rodgers.

Highly detailed and meticulously researched, all the way down to and including in-depth coverage of financial matters and labor-relations. But very densely-written (which to be fair the in-depth coverage of such arcane and technical subject-matter pretty much demands) and difficult to read, especially the second half. Perhaps best absorbed in small doses.Meant for serious battleship/naval history buffs and academics, not casual history fans.

In Steamborn, we're introduced to Jacob, a teenage boy and resident of the city of Ancora who often finds himself in trouble. He's brilliant with gadgets and inventions as an apprentice to his mentor, Charles. While Jacob does have both of his parents, Charles is still like a father figure to him, and I loved their interactions. He is impressed by Jacob's devotion to their inventions and encourages his thoughts and ideas.Jacob's friend, Alice, is straight-laced and a rule follower but extremely caring and loyal. I loved their close friendship and the way it blossomed over the course of the story.While Steamborn does start a bit slowly, it soon picks up its pace and has a lot going for it. There's giant bugs, steampunk gadgets that are easy to imagine and understand, the struggle between the rich and the poor, and a mystery Jacob discovers about the city he's lived in for his entire life. An excellent start to an excellent trilogy!Steamforged gives us a look into the world outside of the city of Ancora and into the Deadlands and the city of Bollwerk. Jacob, Alice, Charles and Samuel (a spider knight) travel across the Deadlands to Bollwerk, and new characters are introduced. My favorite new character was Mary, who's not only a strong and independent woman but also an airship captain (go Mary!). I loved her!While Steamborn was more introductory, Steamforged brings much needed action and suspense to the trilogy. I looked forward to experiencing the places and people which were talked about in the first book.There's tension and I love delving into the differences between the poor and the rich because a lot of those parts of the story seem to parallel what's going on in the real world. I think there's a message in this story about the lengths the rich will go to in order to protect themselves no matter the heavy cost the poor ends up paying. Steamforged gave me a lot to think about with terrific characters and stellar writing. I loved it!Man, Steamsworn hit me hard right in the feels! Asher upped the ante with for his characters with this last installment in the Steamborn trilogy. The book was action packed from beginning to end, and there were moments where I think my heart stopped from being kept in suspense. My emotions were all over the place, and I couldn't believe how much was happening. It wasn't overwhelming at all, so don't worry about that.Steamsworn means so much to me because I love the characters fiercely. I feel their feelings and know their thoughts. They've become like real people to me with their hopes and fears.This last installment in the trilogy was satisfying, and while I'll miss the characters and their passion to fight for what's right, I'm happy with the way it ended.

This series is a combination of the post-apocalyptic, dystopian and steampunk genres. (Although it is not technically true steampunk, since that genre really includes the Victorian society and aesthetic as point to the steam-driven technology.) This boxed set includes all 3 books in the Steamborn series (Steamborn, Steamforged, and Steamsworn). It is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity was all but wiped out and is slowly rebuilding society, but is now competing with mutated and enlarged bugs. (Some of the bugs are clear analogs to modern spiders, others are less distinctly recognizable). Humanity lives in enclaves and is not only rebuilding from the apocalypse, but also from a more recent war Technology is mostly steam-driven: Steam-driven trains, trucks, war machines, copters, and air-ships (dirigibles), but also includes bio-mechanics.The story follows a young, low-born tinker who, as protagonists are wont to do, gets into trouble with authorities, flees and then moves from situation to situation of increasing danger in order to reclaim his life. Well - sort of.The underlying message discusses the horrors of war, issues of class-ism, the ethics of of good men forced to do bad things and of bad men who enjoy doing bad things - and what the potential difference is.The books are well written and although the plot has a somewhat predictable arc, there are some twists and the characters are well developed and likeable. The world is well developed and the mechanics of the mechanisms are considered and practical (no magic or technological hand-waves, with the exception of the assumptions that bio-mechanics are possible.) Although the main character is definitely Jacob, the other supporting characters are given personality and have/play important roles. Jacob would not succeed without the others; a fact which he recognizes and which keeps him grounded. Alice, his friend and potential romantic interest is intelligent and strong in her own right. Charles, his mentor, is more than just a Yoda figure who gives instructions. Simon, his older friend, as a knight, serves as devil's advocate and naysayer, but is there, in full support, when things come down on their heads. Others also join the party as the story progresses.The third book ends without fully resolving the situation in the world, which means that there will hopefully be more books in the series - which I will happily purchase and read.

I love reading books about books, and this little gem does not disappoint. Collins is an engaging author whose love of books, at the very least, matches my own. As he described sorting through towering piles of dusty old books, I felt myself nestled in the corner next to him, searching for my own treasures. Full of envy, I yearned for this to be true.I found myself jotting down notes for many of the books he references here, hoping I might one day have the chance to read some of them myself. Mr. Collins takes the reader on a wonderful adventure in this tiny town of book lovers called Hay-On-Wye, or "Town of Books". The town is full of character and characters, both of which are wonderfully appealing. I must make it a point to visit there one day.If you are a lover of books, this is definitely one for you. I can't recall another book about books that I have enjoyed as much as this one. It is definitely going on my Favorites shelf to be read again and again.

Right now I seem to be in this wonderful cycle of delightful books about books. I started the year with "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore", then I caught up with Thursday Next in Jasper Fforde's wonderful books, then "Village Books" by Craig McLay (which might only be available as an e-book but was fantastic)...and then "Sixpence House".This wonderful book about Paul Collin's visit/move to a small town in England, Hay-on-Wye (population: 1500. Number of bookstores = 40) was so enjoyable to read. Not only does he describe and delight in the written world, the joy of reading, the texture and smell and heft of books, he gives the reader a colorful and meaningful look at this small town - including some very insightful contrasts to life in the United States.As much of the story deals with a search for a house in Hay-on-Wye, he spends a good deal of time talking about architecture. The look and feel of the buildings and homes in small town England."...most building materials today will not age gracefully and were never meant to. They are only meant to be new. Perhaps the ancient brick walls in London weren't built with much more foresight for their aesthetic future than any structure today; yet by their very nature they succeeded perfectly as ruins."The humor in this book is wonderful as well. As obvious as it is that Collins adores the British and many aspects of their way of life, he does poke gentle fun at them...or maybe I should say, with them. "No situation is so dire that it cannot be interrupted for tea. It is particularly important to the British when it is cold and damp outdoors, which is often, or when it is cold and damp indoors, which is always."And, "The fellow roots around and walks us to an oaken side door of the castle, producing from his pocket a skeleton key so weighty that he has clearly stolen it from Vincent Price."Collins gives the same treatment to American life, though possibly with just a bit more edge. (This made it all the more funny, as far as I was concerned.) "The fresh milk is gone too. It just seems so strange to be denied this; to an American, finding empty shelves in a market, to be told that you can't buy something, is a little like waking up and being told that gravity has been switched off until further notice."And yet, the most wonderful aspect of this book, is his underlying love and fascination with books. He writes them, reads them, collects them, organizes them...is surrounded by these wonderful chronicles of human dreams, ideas, history, ideas of the future.And here, too, his gentle humor shines through. Surrounded as he has been for his life by books, he knows them well enough to poke a bit of fun at them as well. "If a book cover has raised lettering, metallic lettering, or raised metallic lettering, then it is telling the reader: Hello, I am an easy-to-read work on espionage, romance, a celebrity, and/or murder. To readers who do not care for such things, this lettering tells them: Hello, I am crap. Such books can use only glossy paper for the jacket; Serious Books can use glossy finish as well, but it is only Serious Books that are allowed to use matte finish."(And one delightful coincidence between the last two books about books that I've read? Both mention the English cider "Scrumpy" - though with wildly differing opinions of the drink.)I loved "Sixpence House" and dreaded finishing it - I can only hope my luck in books continues.

This book seems to fit that definition--one man's response and reflections on moving to a unique environment and meeting a motley group of denizens. I'm a reader but he almost never mentioned a book I had heard of or read. I like that! Like the author, I am saddened to think that there are books no one wants to read, books that will go to burning or pulping instead of into a library or personal collection. Some of the book is a meditation on why authors continue to write books that soon enough will end up on the sagging shelves in a place like Hay. And then, the author will find a treasure and be off on a reading adventure. I found this quirky book a worthwhile read which asked questions and opened up lines of inquiry more challenging than most other contemporary biographies.

The story chronicles a family's move from California to Great Britain and their search for the perfect house for them in the village they have decided to make their new home. Haven't we all dreamed of having such an adventure? This was a good, light read that had me laughing out loud at times. I enjoyed reading about the quirky characters that inhabit the village; especially the "King". The author had some interesting observations or comparisons of life in America versus life in Great Britain and I really found their real estate rules crazy. It must be terribly frustrating to be a home buyer there!The village where they have chosen to settle, once dying as the modern world raced past them, has been revived as the. "Book Capital of the World". The author gives us an in depth look into that world. As an avid reader, I was horrified by the book burnings and fascinated that there would be so many books in one place this would be necessary.The book is full of interesting tidbits about the world of books. The thread that ties everything together is the search for the perfect place to call home.Some reviewers felt the author was too descriptive with the details about this family's daily life in the village, down to what hey were eating. I embraced those details. As anyone who has traveled to Great Britain knows, some of their food can only be described as interesting. For me it was like a trip there without leaving home. I found this book very enjoyable.

An ingenious map concept. An easy to read map nicely showing all the prime tourist highlights, view points, parks, etc. It’s very legible considering how much needs to be crammed into a small space. The outer cover is fairly durable laminated cardstock that will slip into a pocket easily. As some have noted the map that pops out is a bit delicate and won’t take rough handling. I’d give it a 5 star review except for the fact that the scale is presented as a ratio (1:13,000) rather than a linear scale in miles or kilometers. Not very handy when you’re trying to figure out walking distances.

I like the pop-up city maps, they fit in an open pocket of a purse for quick reference on the go. I have several for European cities: Barcelona, Madrid, Brussels. The Edinburgh map is disappointing, it has only a single map of the city center. It doesn't have a public transport map, detailed maps of other tourist areas such as the Leith port (Royal Britannia), and other areas. I will use the map, but it isn't as good as others in the series.

Now know why this map is cheaper. It’s only half the map all other pop out maps are. This only has a map of the city center area that includes the royal mile. Useful for that but wish it also had a bigger city version on the other side. Would have been useful to have a map that included the airport and Leith harbor area.

I loved this map, until I was actually in Edinburgh and the thing fell apart at all of the folding seams. The seams are perforated, which is great for tearing out sheets, but lousy for holding a folding pop out map together.

This was an amazing map to have. It had clear indications of which streets in the city were intersections with bridges and which went under the overpasses (important to know when walking through Edinburgh!) it is small enough to fit in a back pocket, purse, or backpack. Great value for the price!

Perfect size, has all you need to enjoy Edinbruh (say it that way!). I used it, son used it, Terry my friend borrowed it and loved it. I highly recommend this adorbs map.

I haven't finished a book this quickly in a long time. I loved it. I want more Roz. That is all.

I'm a 37 yr old guy. I picked this up because it sounded cool! And it definitely is cool. I had high expectations for it based on the reviews. It was a very UNIQUE and enjoyable story, written very well, with great characters.Very minor spoilers to follow: I took one star away only because it sort of vilifies humans. And it gets quite violent towards the end, where some of our main characters as well as our favorite robot are suffering at the hands of humans. I understand that we humans encroach upon and destroy nature and it affects a lot of natural habitats, and we need to be more mindful of that. I had simply hoped that in the story humans would maybe learn a lesson, or there would be at least one good person. I guess the author could be trying to teach these principles to kids by making the robot set the example, but I don't know if kids are going to relate to a robot as much as they would a human, or human child. I think may be the robot could have used a young human friend. Maybe I'm wrong. The robot certainly is an adequate role model to follow. And there is a sequal coming out. Maybe in the sequal the robot will have a human friend, or teach humans how to be more mindful of nature.In conclusion, as a parent I would just be slightly concerned that my child might come away from this story with bit of hatred or disdain for mankind. Some children might, while others might not. You be the judge. Im just not sure if the idea of humans being muderous villians, with no redemption, is the kind of message you want to be sending to a child at a very young age. In the end I would recommend this to people of all ages because it is a good tale and it's very original. Just maybe read it before you give it to your child.

Review from 10-year old boy: I loved the book. Robots are awesome. Same thing with the wilderness. If you combine them together, you get this book. This book is so good it's hard to put down. I read for two hours and 30 minutes straight and could've kept going. That's a new record for me. With the books I used to read, I could only read for an hour. One of the other reasons I like this book is because none of the main characters die. Up until I finished the book, I knew it was a best seller. My dad really liked the book too.

As she explores the island to learn more about her new home, the animals fear they are being invaded by a monster. Gradually, they learn that she likes to help them, and they, in turn, help her. When she adopts an orphaned gosling and builds a nest for herself and her new son, she becomes a full-fledged member of the community. Her building and fire-making abilities save the animals during an unusually frigid winter. Roz’s happy world is shattered, though, when her robot past catches up with her. War comes to the island as the animals seek to protect her. Can this robot really be “wild”, or must she be true to her automaton nature? 288 pages; grades 3-7.Pros: Charlotte’s Web meets The Iron Giant in this debut novel from illustrator Peter Brown. The story is touching without being sappy or emotional, and thought-provoking without being preachy. Brown’s own illustrations are generously inserted throughout the text. If I were on the Newbery committee, this would be going to the top of my list.Cons: The ending is a little dark. Until the last few chapters, I thought this would be a perfect read-aloud for grades 2 and up. Now I would say grade 3 or even 4 would be the youngest. Read it first if you’re not sure.

This review is on behalf of my youngest(7). After struggling with reading early on, she learned to love it and when she read The Wild Robot last year, it became her favorite book. This has been her first experience of anticipating a sequel and it lived up to her expectations in every way. She really enjoyed following Roz and Brightbill from accidental beginning to triumphant end(?), and we had an interesting conversation centered around this book about what makes you you and how portable that might be. After staying up late to finish the sequel and then talk my ear off about it, she locked the two books in a special case usually reserved for dolls to protect them from any kind of threat.I'm not sure there's a star rating for that, but you get the picture.

For as long as I can remember, I--like the author--have been obsessed with robots, even more with robots interacting with the natural world in some bizarre capacity. So when I saw this novel, I couldn't wait to read it. Luckily, my lovely wife gifted it to me for Christmas, so here we are, me having read it.In general, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It definitely feels like an extended children's illustrated storybook, and that's not a bad thing. However, it might take a bit for some folks to really get into the groove of the novel--as, for a kids book, the real "story" takes a bit to truly get moving.Along those lines, this is definitely for younger readers. But some parents / guardians / those-reading-the-book-aloud-to-someone might be caught off guard by the surprising violence near the book's end. For such a fun and cute story--even with some small moments of natural darkness--the climactic chapters seemed a bit much and out of place for such a story.Still, it has solid writing and a fun story, and the artwork is truly gorgeous. Brown's work is fantastic, and I'm glad to see that his long-form storytelling is almost as solid as his short form. It might not have been the norm for him, but I'll be there to read his next middle-grade novel, too.

This book does an excellent job impressing this upon the reader.I found this book very similar in style and experience to Undaunted Courage (which detailed the Voyage of Discovery undertaken by Lewis and Clark) and River of Doubt (dealing with Theodore Roosevelt's exploration of the Amazon basin. The meeting of Dr David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley in the middle of Africa in 1871 is perhaps one of the most remarkable and dramatic events in history. Like the Miracle of Dunkirk, when a flotilla of civilian boats rescued the British army from Nazi forces early in WWII, the near impossible odds of success and eventual epic victory seem to be pulled from a Tolkien book rather than real history. Thus Martin Dugard’s Into Africa: The Epic Adventures of Stanley and Livingstone, is rightfully a story first and a history second. In Dugard’s story, Stanley is the true protagonist, who will survive Africa to become Livingstone’s successor as the world’s greatest explorer. However, he ends up working counter to the Doctor’s goal of a slavery-free Africa, tragically helping to make the Dark Continent... darker.The book begins at the start of Livingstone’s third and final trek into Africa in 1866. The world renowned, prototypical explorer and paragon of Victorian virtue is desperate to redeem his reputation and finances after his disastrous 1858 Zambezi expedition. He sets out to find the source of the Nile, an elusive mystery since 460 BC when the ancient Greek Herodotus failed to find the source. However, despite setting out with his usual exhilaration, writing in his journal that Africa is “a tonic to the system”, the trials of Africa quickly overwhelm the now older man. His porters desert him, taking irreplaceable supplies. He constantly fights all manner of African diseases, often so weakened by fever and dysentery that his few remaining porters have to carry him.Completely obsessed with finding the source, he relies on the Arab slave traders he despises to continue his quest. Dugard writes that “it was as if he had sold a part of his soul in the name of ambition.” After staying with the slavers for five years, he witnesses the Arabs massacre a village of Africans deep in the center of the continent. Faced with the evil of the slave trade, he leaves for the small village of Ujiji, where, sick and without supplies, he helplessly and hopelessly waits for a “good Samaritan” to rescue him.Livingstone has been gone for nearly four years and is presumed dead by many when the New York Herald’s owner, James Gordon Bennett, seeking an exciting story to distract the public from a gold market scandal, assigns Stanley, his foreign correspondent, the task of finding Livingstone. An unlikely African explorer, Stanley was born in England to a prostitute and the town drunk. Abandoned at the age of five, he was sent to live in a orphanage where he was regularly sexually violated until, at the age of 17, he escaped to America. In the States he fights for both the Confederacy and Union in the Civil War, where he discovers his talent for writing. After an ill-fated adventure in Turkey, he dedicates himself to journalism, eventually joining the staff of the Herald.Ironically, Stanley’s horrific upbringing prepares him well for the brutalities of an African expedition. After months of preparation, facing almost no chance of success, he sets out with a large caravan from Zanzibar. Struggling to lead his recalcitrant men, Stanley resorts to whipping them constantly, at one point writing in his journal “The virtue of a good whip was well tested by me”. Overcoming multiple mutiny attempts, a near fatal case of cerebral malaria, a war with “The African Bonaparte”, crocodile attacks, and worst of all the unforgiving African landscape itself, Stanley finds the strength and confidence he has always lacked. Miraculously, he also finds Livingstone. Upon their meeting he asks the now famous question, “Doctor Livingstone, I presume?”Stanley and Livingstone spend weeks together in Ujiji. Stanly, “basking in the older man’s grace”, writes of the doctor:“I grant that he is not an angel, but he approaches to that being as near as the nature of a living man will allow.”Stanley tries to convince Livingstone to return to England with him but the Doctor refuses. Weeks after one of the most improbable meetings in history, Stanley returns to Zanzibar and Livingstone continues his quest for the source. He dies shortly after, his body destroyed by years of African hardship and disease, in a village almost 600 miles south of the actual source. Stanley takes up Livingstone’s mantle as the world’s greatest explorer, finding the source of the Congo and following the dangerous river all the way to the West coast of the continent.Dugard tells this story with great care and skill. He is himself an adventurer and while researching Into Africa, he followed Stanley’s path across what is today Tanzania, getting thrown into an African prison while doing so. This is, presumably, what helps him understand his explorers’ relationship with the African landscape, leading to wonderful insights such as the following after Stanley’s near miss with a crocodile:“Africa had soothed him and calmed him and made him feel as if he were its master. But it was all a myth. The continent had no equal.”Dugard also enhances his story with an epic style. Like a gifted movie director, he cuts chapters back and forth between Stanley, Livingstone, and the rest of the world, creating dramatic scope and pacing. Little details, for instance starting each Stanley-focused chapter by counting down the “Miles to Livingstone”, gives an intense sense of urgency to his relentless quest. But Dugard never loses the intimacy of his characters. For example, when he describes Stanley “striving desperately to say exactly the right thing” when meeting Livingstone.If Dugard loses anything in his account, it is the different impacts Stanley and Livingstone will have on Africa after their meeting. Livingstone’s fervent abolitionist beliefs and his graphic description of the horrific slave trade, especially the massacre he witnesses, will spur the British Empire to use its superpower status to end the slave trade. Stanley, however, tragically uses his knowledge of the Congo to enforce the brutal Belgian regime of King Leopold II, failing to continue the true legacy of Livingstone. The two explorers serve as contrasting symbols, the best and worst of Western action in Africa.

“Doctor Livingstone, I presume?” These iconic words are culturally embedded in the psyche of Americans (and, I assume, the British as well), but I had only a vague understanding of their meaning before reading Dugard’s account of the two expeditions that would bring the phrase into household immortality—the first of which was Dr. David Livingstone’s search to once-and-for-all find the source of the Nile and the other was Henry Stanley’s search to discover whether Livingstone was still alive.If one isn’t a diehard history buff, it can be hard to maintain one’s interest in events of almost 150 years ago. Let me assure you, this isn’t the case for stories of African explanation—including “Into Africa.” If the author is at all skilled, these books read like novels with an almost improbably high level and pace of tension. That’s because almost everything in Africa in those days was working against the explorer, and most things were actively trying to kill him. A summary of threats include: a panoply of diseases (e.g. malaria, dysentery, etc.), an ark of animals and insects (e.g. poisonous snakes, lions, elephants, rhinos, etc.), and of course tribes and other humans (e.g. one could find oneself caught in the cross-fire between Arab slave traders and tribes who resented being enslaved, even if one had no stake in the fight.) And if none of those killers got one (and at least some of them always did), your men might desert you in the middle of the night while absconding with all your goods—and those goods were how one paid for both one’s food and for safe passage through tribal lands. In Dugard’s work, one sees each of these threats played and replayed, as well as a host of others from political conflicts, incompetence, and disgruntledness. It should be noted that there was almost no precedence for sending someone to look for a lost explorer—it was considered so unlikely to succeed in that era, not to mention likely getting a lot more killed.The book largely alternates chapters featuring Stanley with those featuring Livingstone. This is particularly the case once the book reaches the point at which Stanley is actively on the trail. These were very different men, but the name of each man became synonymous with courage. Stanley was an American journalist who made it to the top based solely on willingness to go places and do things other reporters wouldn’t. In fact, he had trouble making a go of his career starting out, and it wasn’t until a traumatic adventure that he developed the assertiveness to make something of himself. Livingstone was already a legend when he took on this expedition, and was arguably too far past prime to be taking on such an adventure. The men were also quite different as expedition leaders. Stanley ran his caravan with an iron fist, while Livingstone was known for being lax and easily distracted—while they were at opposite end of the spectrum in this regard, it seems likely that both would have succeeded better with more moderation.At the book’s beginning there’s a conflict at the Royal Geographical Society between Richard Burton (the explorer, not the actor) and John Speke over the source of the Nile. Livingston, a living legend, was asked to investigate and settle the issue—an objective he didn’t complete. It should be noted that finding the river’s source isn’t as easy as it sounds. Speke was correct in that the Nile reached at least to Lake Victoria (at the equator), but it wasn’t clear whether Victoria was connected to other lakes in the southern hemisphere, and—if so—how far down it went. There was a chain of lakes to the south that might have drained into the Nile, but, as it happens, flow into the Congo River.I found this to be fascinating reading. The book consists of 40 chapters divided among five parts, and so most of the chapters are quick reads and the interspersal of the Stanley and Livingstone story lines keeps the pacing going nicely. Dugard did a good job structuring the narrative.I’d recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about Stanley, Livingstone or who just want to know what it was like to be an explorer on the Dark Continent. [Fun-fact: While “dark continent” sounds blatantly racist, it turns out that the phrase was originally used in reference to the fact that so much of the map was blank—i.e. it was largely unmapped.]

This is simply the most beautiful book I have ever owned. The paper is cool and crisp to the touch and the coloration, though not what my instinct tells me I should like, is lovely. The print is very clean and since this is Chaucer in the Middle English, that is a necessity. I can read the works as originally written, but need to really concentrate. If the print were not good enough, I would have great difficulty. The illustrations are so intricate that one can spend time just exploring and absorbing them. This is a book to be enjoyed on many levels.PS - This is a large and heavy book. You will need to sit at a table or a comfortable couch or arm chair.

Even in a modest sized typeface this thing comes in at more than a thousand pages. There is an excellent glossary if context fails to enlighten. The music of the language, the vividness of the writing, who could match it or ever has?Still, middle English is not for everyone. The differences slow one down just enough for the glory of the writing to sink in.

I love Chaucer's text, of course, but the typeface is so small, it's a real strain on the eyes. I can't read this book for more than an hour at a time.The publisher was not thinking about his audience, the reader.

Contrary to what the title says, there is not a single work of Chaucer's in this entire volume. The texts of Chaucer's works appear in volume II, and this is volume I.What volume I contains is a fine collection of linguistic tools useful in reading and analyzing Chaucer's works, including guides to pronunciation, grammar, and versification. A sizable glossary of Middle English comprises the largest part of the book. I already had a such a glossary, but am happy to keep this book, since I believe it will be very useful when I someday settle down to read more Chaucer in a serious way. (Shipping costs from Taiwan also make it silly to even consider returning a book.)This volume was apparently printed from a photocopy of the 1894 Oxford Clarendon press edition of Skeat's work. In spite of occasional little black specks on the page, the printing quality is acceptable and the text is easily legible. Because the copyright has obviously run out on this work, you can find it online for free. But it's certainly worth it to get a nicely printed and bound edition - printing out pages one by one usually doesn't represent any savings, and is inconvenient to say the least.So, if you want a book of solid early scholarship on Chaucer's works, and you don't want to print it out yourself from the Internet, great - buy this reprint. If you are looking for the complete works of Chaucer, this is NOT it! Try the Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, Part 2 edition instead.

The only thing that can possibly be better is the original Kelmscott edition. This is high-quality facsimile of the same book even with a nice embossed cover.

An absolutely BEAUTIFUL book!

To this day I remember waiting in line for some hours or more to simply walk through one of the first 747's that was on a National tour and parked on the tarmac at Greater Southwest International Airport half way between Dallas and Ft. Worth in the late 1960's. Accepting the enormity of the aircraft was somewhat difficult even when seeing it and walking through it. With it's double aisles and four distinct passenger cabin areas it's spaciousness was really overwhelming. The next versions of double aisle jet liners, the DC-10, L-1011 and B767 all were introduced some years later. The first scheduled 747 commercial flights by Pan Am to London began in the Summer of 1970. Personally my first 747 flight was on an Air France version nonstop from Chicago O'Hare to Paris de Gaulle in the mid 1970's. Since that time I have been fortunate to fly the 747 many times, but, the thrill of travel on this aircraft never became jaded. And initially the development of the 747 was almost an afterthought. When Boeing lost the competition for the design and construction of a large military transport plane to the Lockheed C5A-Galaxy, their design for that U.S. Government specification was the basis for the upper cockpit and for the lower front to back passenger cabin. The Queen reigned for more than thirty-five years before the development and entry into service of the A-380 in 2007. This book details the story of the creation of the 747.

A good easy read about Joe Sutter and the 747. I'd seen a few documentaries about the genesis of the 747 and Joe was in most of them. He lays it all out in the book and details the struggle to keep the project moving forward while fighting off upper management's cost cutting efforts, others trying to get him replaced as the lead, and trying to satisfy the customer. He was interesting to listen to as a man in his 90s when he recalled the story in the documentaries, but I can only imagine what he must have been like in his prime when doing battle in his arena. Glad to have it in my library.

.This book is authored by Joe Sutter and Jay Spenser and chronicles Sutter's life and the development of the 747 from Sutter's perspective as chief engineer. I recently watched a special on Boeing where Sutter was briefly interviewed and discussed the recent entry of the Boeing 787 into commercial service. Below are two observations and five excerpts from the book that I found valuable from a leadership perspective.ObservationsA. Sutter was a believer in simple and not afraid to try different things. It is amazing to know he cut out paper airplane engines and moved them around a line drawing of a 737 as part of the process that established engine location for the 747.B. Even at Sutter's high status and power level negative politics are a fact of life and must be dealt with. He provided examples of unwanted help he had to take, unrealistic deadlines and people trying to take over his roles and responsibilities.Excerpts from the book1. By far the biggest lesson I learned from the 737 was never to take an initial design configuration as a given. It's human nature to do just that and go charging ahead to work within an existing framework... Engineers love to dive right in and analyze the hell out of reams of data. Very often though, they can't see the forest for the trees because they haven't done the simple work up front to be sure they are starting down the right path... The more brain power you apply up front, the greater the likelihood that you'll find the design path that solves your challenges and meets your customers' requirements... If I made an individual contribution, it was my insistence that we take stock before charging out of the starting blocks.2. I let my people run with the ball and made sure to give credit where it was due. I also strove to communicate well. On the 747 program, I was the one making the decisions--I'm not a consensus guy--but I generally did so only after hearing everybody out with an open mind.3. Real leadership means having the courage to do what you know is right. (This always sounds easier than it is and Sutter provides some examples of high pressure situations where he did this)4. If we had differences, I made sure we resolved them on the spot.5. ...I realized that all of us on that incredibly complex and demanding program were so close to our own problems that we probably couldn't see the forest for the trees. I decided to fix that... I worked hard to keep my 747 engineering team as broadly informed as myself. Sitting in on their meetings or visiting their locales for impromptu gatherings, I covered the sales picture, our engineering challenges and successes, pertinent events inside and outside the company... I saw the role of the manager isn't simply to pass out instructions; it is also to inform... people need to know where they stand. It's a psychological necessity, and morale suffers in the absence of such knowledge.This book proves once again the fundamental parameters for success are not complex. The key lies in the discipline (yours and the organization's) to adhere to those parameters.* Evaluate all options before going forward* Empower people and give them credit* Make decisions only after listening* Stand up for what is right* Resolve issues quickly* Constantly communicate the big picture to everyoneExamine the bullets above. Joe Sutter describes the development of the Boeing 747 from his point of view as a member of the engineering and management team that made it happen. The book delves deeply into the influences that shaped the 747 to become the plane it did, such as the head of Pan American Airlines. As such, it offers interesting insights into the politics at the Boeing company, at least as seen by Mr. Sutter.Some have criticized the book as disjointed, etc. but that is a disservice to Mr. Sutter. After all, he's describing the development of the 747 from his point of view. This is not meant to be a end-all comprehensive tome that chronicles all the development stages of the plane in a manner that allows all who partook in it to have a voice (which is inherently impossible for a project of this size). Instead, it is a sampling of the engineering and political challenges that Mr. Sutter faced during his tenure with the 747, which I found incredibly interesting.The 747 was a big gamble that almost bankrupted Boeing. One of the reasons it got off the ground at all was because the decision-makers at Boeing were willing to bet the farm that this type of airplane would find broad use in a market that had yet to fully develop. From Mr. Sutters point of view, it was this bold and intuitive decision-making that put Boeing on the path to dominate its domestic and foreign rivals.I would love to see further analysis from Mr. Sutter in this area of expertise... the challenge of Embraer and Comac is looming and I wonder what he makes of the Boeing/Airbus response to a challenge to their bread and butter market.
