I was looking for a good introduction to learning attic and koine Greek and selected Jones' book as my place to start.The good: It's a pretty gentle introduction, many other similar books I've looked at are more eager to hurl the student into the deep end. The book does not require previous knowledge of Latin, as some texts do. Jones supplies the answers to all of his exercises, so it is more appropriate for self-teaching than other books.The bad: Jones cuts some corners with the language to make it easier on the student. He also doesn't provide detailed explanations as to what's going on with the underpinnings of the language. For example, he doesn't explain how "middle" verbs are situated between active and passive forms, which I think would promote understanding. Also, some of the translations early in the book rely so heavily on vocabulary and forms not yet learned that they're not all that useful. This gets a bit better as the book progresses, but even at the end of the book the reader isn't equipped with everything they need to attack confidently most new testament passages and certainly not for most of the classics.The indifferent: As other reviewers have pointed out, some of the author's jokes are a bit ribald. I'd rate them as PG-13. If you're looking for a text to teach a ten year old, I could understand wanting to find a different text, but for anyone in the mid-teens, if they can't handle Jones' jokes, they need to get out more. Another reviewer was disappointed that Jones didn't provide translations of the biblical passages, but there are plenty of free sources online that will serve just fine. Jones doesn't explain the literary convention of accenting classic Greek. Can a Greek student manage without this knowledge? Yes. Except in specific cases which Jones points out, you can mostly get along fine without them. However, for various reasons accents are considered to be an integral part of classic Greek, so truly serious students will probably feel like they have a gap in their knowledge that needs to be filled.So, this is a decent, fairly gentle introduction to classic Greek that is suitable for self-learning. It's not sufficient to get to the point where the learner is really translating significant Greek passages, and such a student will have gaps, but it can be a reasonable starting point before students learning on their own transition to a more rigorous second beginning text.

Fantastic learning material for Ancient Greek. The author does an amazing job of presenting a vastly different language in an easy and enjoyable manner. Quite honestly, learning beginners Greek was easier than Spanish due to how well this was written.The short chapters are broken up into various sections such as: Presenting a verb form, irregularity, vocabulary, exercises and then a brief overview of some culture pertaining to Ancient Greece in addition to some quirky comic image. To make it even better once you get roughly half way through the author picks parts of plays, historical texts and more for you to translate with what you know.Unlike some other language-learning materials out there, there's answers at the back of every chapter so even though you should try your best to not look at them until you think you're nearly or completely correct, you are never left scratching your head wondering if your right or totally off.The author's sense of humor and thoughtful layout make this probably the absolute best option out there for Beginner-low intermediate Greek. The only bad thing is you have to go to someone else afterwards!

For any student of Greek using American grammars and textbooks and considering purchasing Peter Jones' Learn Ancient Greek, be aware that this a British text and uses a different order for listing the cases. Noun tables follow the order Nom, Voc, Acc, Gen, Dat in contrast to the U.S.: Nom, Gen. Dat, Acc, Voc. If this doesn't bother you, you may find the book useful as a refresher. Jones uses humor, which sometimes is funny and sometimes not.

_Learn Ancient Greek_ is a solid primer to Attic Greek. However, I offer one caveat: the book is considerably easier for those who have some prior experience with language. (More on that later.)Jones does a remarkable job in getting readers comfortable and confident with Greek, translating simple passages by the end of Chapter Two. His humor is a bit dry, but the lessons are solid and build off each other very well. A CD is offered for those who are concerned with pronunciation (I am only interested in reading Greek, but its nice to have it offered).With that said, I would not recommend this book to those who have no experience with language - Greek gets complicated (as Jones points out relatively early on; to his credit, the exceptions to the rules and the grammar itself are very well explained). While Jones provides some clarification of what grammar is (with humor, thankfully) and how it works, I can't imagine getting further than the first few chapters without prior language experience to draw upon. Hence the four stars.For autodidacts, Hellenophiles, or those seeking to fill gaps in their education, I highly recommend this book. By the end of the book you will be translating excerpts from Homer and the Bible, and have an excellent foundation for further formal study.

In his Learn Ancient Greek, P.V. Jones has succeeded in offering both an enjoyable read and an effective self-teaching tool. Those looking for a 1930s discussion of adverbial phrases should save their money as this book actually does what it purports to do--it allows the dedicated reader to learn ancient Greek in an enjoyable, interesting and relaxed manner while, most importantly, promoting understanding and retention. I have a dozen Greek grammars and none is better than this. Rather than providing long lists to memorize, Jones promotes the only truly effective manner of learning any language--written exercise and repetition. Buy this book. You will not regret the choice.

It was intended for everyone as a series of newspaper articles, almost conversational, and I would recommend it to everyone -- anyone who wants to dabble in Greek, but still come away knowing something, or who wants to review their high school course, or who wants to help improve their English vocabulary.

I'm changing my review after reviewing this book close to a final PhD exam, and becoming an expert in some of the subject matter. This book is one of the reasons why Computational Geometry is difficult to grasp. Here are the problems:1. The introductions to each chapter are verbose and has irrelevant, boring examples2. The most relevant part of each chapter is the algorithm. The algorithms part has a lot of terse proofs, and non-intuitive descriptions. Please refer to the Fortune's Voronoi diagram algorithm as an example. By reading this chapter, not even a great student will be able to simply implement it. It's just a long winding, bunch of dry proofs, and then steps of the algorithm, which develops no understanding, that it simply is the intersection of the parabolas that satisfy the requirement of the Voronoi partition.3. The research section towards the end presents some examples, but most of the ideas in these are also not developed to further understanding.I blame this book for turning many smart students away from Computational Geometry. Given that it's considered the standard text book in CG.

Comprehensive, deep, clear (i.e. readable). Pseudo-code (high level) is provided at end of each chapter. Also exercises. Reader must still convert from pseudo-code to programming language in order to actually implement. A web site is listed to help with that, which provides links to programming resources. I haven't yet tried them..

It is a joy to read and review this book -- the exposition is crystal clear; the writing style is warm and engaging (not too terse and not too verbose), conveying understanding and not just stating facts, theorems, and algorithms; the graphics are great (numerous richly detailed illustrations); the topics hit the heart of computational geometry; the historical remarks help set context; and the book is beautifully typeset and printed on high quality acid free paper.

This book is a must to all researchers and students of the field. The algorithms are always presented in the context of an application, which makes it the more understandable. However, the authors chose to present them in a very high level of abstraction, and some of the finer details - so important in these algorithms - are only mentioned, which may pose a problem to obtaining a suitable, efficient implementation of them in a programming language.

Beautiful book, solid contents. I learned a lot from it and had a nice time practicing with the exercises. Lots of examples and problems, a lot of interesting algorithms and techniques, every chapter is a progressive refinement of a particular idea to solve a problem expressed as geometry.Difficulty level: make sure you know some asymptotic analysis and discrete mathematics to get the best out of it, but could be read by anyone who can code i believe (although again, he'll miss a lot of beautiful mathematics)Again, i'm very satisfied with it.

The material is explained in details with good examples, which makes it easy and enjoyable to read (yes, enjoyable!). My only gripe is it doesn't have solutions to the exercise problems.

Great book, very insightful and the fact the book is so technical didn't disable the book's didactic, which by the way i thought very well of it!!!!

This book is a great all-purpose volume to own. Covers lots of topics in a very intuitive way. I highly recommend it.

I have a 6 year old daughter who prefers history over fairies at the library. I ordered a set of the Who Was books for her for Christmas and she chose to begin with Susan B. Anthony. Although we have read other books in this series and found them to be age appropriate, we found this one written at an adult level and had trouble keeping up with the plot. Too difficult for a 6 year old to follow...even mom was confused.

We purchased for a student presentation. It was good, but Amazon has better titles for a SBA biography for kids. Compare to the TIME FOR KIDS bio and the Ready-To-Read bio for better options.

These are great books. All of the Who Was books are excellent for young readers. My daughter gets very excited when she can teach us a little something about history and she seems to truly find things interesting. I think this is a great read for grades 3 and 4

Pretty good book. But has anyone held this book side by side with the "Who Was Clara Barton?" book? The artist's renditions are nearly identical... At first I thought, "this artist is lazy and probably uses the same model for each woman in this series." It would be quite a coincidence if they looked so much alike in reality. But after a brief google search, it turns out that, yes, the two women do have similar features. Kudos to you, cover illustrator!

My 8 yr old loved it. She wanted to learn how voting started and what better way for a young girl to learn than from a well written book for kids.

my kids all love the who/what was series.

I teach third grade. I purchased a "Who Was...?" Book for each of my students at their reading level. They love them. What a great way to introduce biographies to third graders!

Eight and eleven yr. old granddaughters enjoyed reading it.
