I found this book to be an absolutely fascinating read. It's written by an ILM insider which adds to the credibility of the book. The copyright is 1986 so it's cool to read this book with some measure of hindsight to know that ILM was truly ahead of it's time. I found one passage near the end of the book to be incredibly prophetic. The author is discussing CGI enhancement. Remember that this book was written in 1986 when the technology was in it's infancy. He speculated way back then that CGI would one day become the norm in film making. This more than anything else convinces me that ILM only hires true visionaries and that's why ILM is what it is today. This book compliments that opinion. Great book.

This ,like the other 2 books in this seris it is chock full of behind the scenes & stunning photographs of movie Icons. It goes further into detail of the 'how' than the other books which are understandably more general.The 3 books cover Foundation of ILM to the start of the digital realmThe digital realm & the art of FX. The fourth book though not part of the seris is for me 'Inside the model shop' ,a companion to the other three.Together the three books chart the rise of ILM to close to the Present day.Highly recommended for Film buffs , modellers & those who just like this feild presented by people who love what they do & want to talk about it.Chris D

This is a very good coffee-table picture book. The info contained inside is um, questionable. Statements like "Animation was used when the Evil Emporer was firing lightning bolts at Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi" well, I can't argue with it!

This is a replacement copy for a dogged ear one I bought when a college freshman in in 1986.

Great coffee table book with tons of insight behind the early days of ILM. Lots of photos, sketches, and interviews. I dinged it one star since it's written by one of the guys from ILM who's clearly not a writer. This should have been ghost-written or else-wise heavily edited. The prose is sometimes pretty sophomoric.

Thrilled with this purchase. Great condition!

This book turned me upside-down. As a longtime meditator drawn to Buddhism raised in a nonreligious Jewish family, every page carried a revelation. This account of an extraordinary meeting of Jewish leaders from different traditions with the Dalai Lama in India in the 1990s around the theme of surviving in exile is worthwhile reading on many levels. I learned of many threads in Judaism, many as well in Buddhism, and similarities and differences both within and between them. Personally, it led to an extraordinary reawakening and consideration of my roots and a quest to learn more.

In writing this book the author did the world a favor. Through the authors travel and experiences we are gradually introduced to the notion that many of the deepest mystical and meditative ideas that attracted many Westerners (and Jews in particular) to Buddhism were also known and practiced by Jewish sages for thousands of years.Of course there are is an ultimate difference in the Jewish conception of G-d and in some of the intrinsic goals of meditation and life as practiced in Judaism. But remarkably, there are many striking overlaps and similarities. Literally most of what this author was searching for was in his own backyard and he shares this with the world in this book and his his sequel, In Search of Elijah.

It's clear that Kamenetz himself learned a lot during the events he writes of, and the book makes it possible to ride on his shoulders through that both the meeting between the Dalai Lama and a delegation from across the spectrum of Judaism and his digestion of those events afterwards. The book is centered more on Judaism than about Buddhism, and covers issues such as the principles of Kabbalah in an authentic, nontrendy form and how it fits into mainstream Judaism; the commonalities and differences between Jewish and Buddhist views of the world; the failures of current Jewish religious education, and the effects of the Holocaust on modern Judaism (not just the people killed, but ho it has changed the focus of the religion). It addresses some of the same concerns about assimilation as Anne Roiphe's Generation Without Memory, but by contrasting Judaism to Buddhism and examining some of the people who are in a spectrum between the two ("JuBus") comes closer to finding some answers.

I read this book twice, and in the intervening years I had learned more about Jewish mysticism and meditation. As a result, I got a lot more out of the book the second time around. I suspect I would find it even better if I knew more about Buddhism.Rabbi Yitz Greenberg, one of the Jews who met with the Dalai Lama, perhaps summed up what was most important about this meeting between two ancient religions:"All religions," he said, "not just Judaism, are now being placed in a new situation. At first I thought the culture was forcing us. But I've come to believe this pluralism is God's will. Can you learn to propagate your religion without using stereotypes and negative images of the other? If we can't. all religions will go down the tubes-and good riddance-because we're a source of hatred and demolition of other people."

An honest look into two of the world's great religions and how each struggles to survive in similar paths. Roger shares a great understanding of what these religions have to offer humanity along with their challenges and insight on how they can become more relevant to new generations. Very readable.

Charming, satisfying. A cross-section of Jewish intellectuals representing various religious beliefs meets the Dalai Lama to discuss beliefs, mysticism and survival in exile. It is gentle, up-lifting and informative.

I read this book when it first was published and again for a book club now; It ages wonderfully.

I highly recommended this book to anyone looking to understanding spiritual journeys. It is relevant to Jews, Buddhists, and Muslims looking to understand the decline of western religion in a modern world. It tells the story of a Jewish encounter with the Dalai llama, and discusses how western eastern spiritually can be leveraged together to renew spiritual practice.

I just received the book today and am just now thumbing through it. It seems a very insightful and well researched book. However this is clearly a book intended for a U.S. audience. People interested in Canadian cities and planning are likely to be offended. With L.A for example he credits the nice weather for boosting bus ridership. Montreal by comparison has much higher per capita bus ridership than L.A. with much worse weather for most of the year. Seems irrelevant to point out nice weather as a contributing factor for high riidership transit, when right here on the North American continent we have cities that prove otherwise. In Boston he barely mentions the major employment hubs along Route 128. You say something such as either North America’s busiest light rail system, which in terms of ridership I believe the Green Line falls behind the Calgary C-Train as well as Toronto’s streetcar network (if you’re putting that in the same category as light rail) or you say the United State’s busiest light rail system, which in that case, yes the Green Line is the busiest. Saying America by itself is just too vague.Also on his map for Boston he lists several “BRT” bus routes. Boston doesn’t have any full “BRT” Routes. A couple routes with some BRT features, but no full “BRT” On the MBTA map however, the T lists several “Key” bus routes. Most of these “Key” routes, yes are frequent, but have little if anything in the way of full “BRT” features, however the author lists these routes as “BRT”. It’s as though he never went, or even talked to anyone who’s been to Boston.Also any City Planner who goes on about Planning and “Bus Miracles” in Seattle, without mentioning Vancouver, BC a 3 hour drive to the north, makes me seriously question their professionalism. Yes, Seattle has much in common with Boston & Philadelphia, as Spieler mentions, but Seattle has even more in common with Vancouver, and Vancouver is a city which far surpasses “progressive” Seattle & Portland both, when it comes to transit ridership. Spieler neglects to mention this.

The information seems thoughtful and well researched, but several editing mistakes have me questioning data accuracy and distract from an otherwise great publication. Helena Grace Donald hit the nail on the head. She has given young women with negative self images some very practical tools to use to overcome their poor self image and worth. I think every teenager should read this book and every mom who has a teenager. Young women and young men for that matter can easily fall into the trap of poor self image. The passage from teenager to adult is very trying and teenagers tend to be very sensitive about everything but most especially how they look. Sadly way too much emphasis is put physical appearance. As role models we have an important role to play by putting emphasis on being contributors to society with their skills and abilities and NOT how they look.

Every young girl and women will benefit from reading this book.Helena explores issues regarding Diets and how they actually cause you to gain weight instead. She talks about the negative critical voice that girls develop in their heads when they are very young because they try to be perfect. This voice continues to adulthood and causes severe low self-esteem unless something is done about it.I am currently a high school teacher and I see the impact our culture and the media has on teenage girls and their self-esteem. Many out of desperation to fit in will do anything including starving themselves, dressing provocatively, doing drugs, drinking, and getting into fights with other girls.Our idea of "BEAUTY" needs to reallybe explored because the media has been lying to us for far too long. What they think is beautiful is Photoshopped and no one can ever look like that, ever, because it is not real. It is not natural. Young girls will not stop torturing themselves into looking like that until we help them find their own beauty and learn to love themselves just as they are. No ifs, ands, or buts. It is every girl's Human Right to be able to Love and Accept herself unconditionally, no matter what size.I think it's time we as a nation and as women and girls all around the world come together to finally heal the pain of not accepting ourselves. It is time we start talking about this issues because it is long overdue.Thank you Helena for your dedication to healing this planet of beautiful girls.

It is a different world and talking the same language...no, trying to talk the same language does only result in fights that always hurt afterwards. An honest and smart read that every girl should read along with their mother. Girls are bombarded not only from the media but boys and men to be physically a perfect specimen that is almost impossible to attain. This book gives girls a realistic look at using some simple tools to have a healthy life and not be living to be something else. Excellent.

I bought this book for my mother and sister. Even though the book is steered towards adolescents, they both (28 & 57) both took a great deal from the material. They were both inspired and said it introduced several healthy ideas to help motivate them to change some current outlooks they have on life that had not been the most positive in the past.

Great book on Christian Spirituality

It is an excellent book, for personal use and for my use as a spiritual director in guiding others on their spiritual journeys.

I was impressed with the condition of this used book. The content was what I'd hoped for- down to earth and relatable.

All to often prayer is viewed as a perfunctory task that we go through in order to communicate with God. Our prayers may consist of flowery words that are not relevant to our lives and sound artificial to our ears. Is it a surprise then that people have such great difficulty with prayer? Joseph Schmidt challenges us in breaking the above view by suggesting another alternative in communicating with God. Why not honestly reflect on the daily events of our lives and become aware of God's word and work in them? In other words, pray our experiences which give meaning to life instead of babbling to God about things that don't touch us. If God is the source of our existence then we can know God through our experiences. Prayer takes on a new meaning and enables us to enter in life more fully and intereact intimately with the God who Loves us for who and what we are. Such a notion is radical and gives us a new perspective in honestly sharing ourselves with God. Praying Our Experiences shows us the process of how we can get to know ourselves as God knows us. Step by step Schmidt introduces us to a way in which we can begin the experience. This is not a formula driven book on prayer where you learn techniques for praying. Our author presents to us a guide to enable you to develop a more fully developed prayer life devoid of the barriers which we place in the way of knowing ourselves and God. Such a book is an excellent guide in helping you to achieve a deeper intimacy of God in your prayer life.

Having read two other books by Brother Joe I was looking for something else and came cross this small volume. Brother Joe takes the reader along a path of enlightenment for these days. If one finds oneself at the short end for prayer time or finds that the work has really intruded into his or hers private time Brother Joe offers a choice. He shows how one can take what is perceived as the ordinary and the mundane and find a souce of prayer. I found the suggestions good and have used some in my daily prayer.Thanks again Brother Joe you have had three successes in my life.

I first read Praying Our Experiences when it first came out 20 years ago. This concise guide to prayer touched me deeply and opened me to the wide world of praying. I bought copies for friends, family members, and used it with classes that I taught. The praise for the book has been uniformly enthusiastic. Prayer is not just for clergy, rabbis, monks, and nuns: we can all pray, whenever and wherever we are, in any way that we can. The most important prayer comes from the heart and is honest communication about the real events of our lives. POE may be short in pages, but it is long on wisdom. I have returned to my well-worn copy over and over in the last 20 years whenever I have needed a reminder that the Creator is always willing to listen to prayers from my experience. I am delighted that the editors offer this anniversary edition: well done. The book is a gift to all of us.

I had been struggling in my prayer life, when I first read this book. I just did not feel like I was connecting with God when I got on my knees and "Prayed."Prayer supplements your relationship with Christ; prayer is the conversation you have with God. This book points out where else in your daily life you pray. For me this was my primary form of prayer and I did not even know it.This book is a MUST read. It is only 80 pages or something like that and is written in very simple terms. Give this book to yourself and someone you love.
