Amazon Exclusive: John Grisham Reviews The Lost City of Z Since first publishing A Time to Kill in 1988, John Grisham has written twenty novels and one work of nonfiction, The Innocent Man. His second novel, The Firm, spent 47 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, becoming the bestselling novel of 1991. The success of The Pelican Brief, which hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and The Client, which debuted at number one, confirmed Grisham's reputation as the master of the legal thriller. His most recent novel, The Associate, was published in January 2009. Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of The Lost City of Z: In April of 1925, a legendary British explorer named Percy Fawcett launched his final expedition into the depths of the Amazon in Brazil. His destination was the lost city of El Dorado, the “City of Gold,” an ancient kingdom of great sophistication, architecture, and culture that, for some reason, had vanished. The idea of El Dorado had captivated anthropologists, adventurers, and scientists for 400 years, though there was no evidence it ever existed. Hundreds of expeditions had gone looking for it. Thousands of men had perished in the jungles searching for it. Fawcett himself had barely survived several previous expeditions and was more determined than ever to find the lost city with its streets and temples of gold. The world was watching. Fawcett, the last of the great Victorian adventurers, was financed by the Royal Geographical Society in London, the world’s foremost repository of research gathered by explorers. Fawcett, then age 57, had proclaimed for decades his belief in the City of Z, as he had nicknamed it. His writings, speeches, and exploits had captured the imagination of millions, and reports of his last expedition were front page news. His expeditionary force consisted of three men--himself, his 21-year-old son Jack, and one of Jack’s friends. Fawcett believed that only a small group had any chance of surviving the horrors of the Amazon. He had seen large forces decimated by malaria, insects, snakes, poison darts, starvation, and insanity. He knew better. He and his two companions would travel light, carry their own supplies, eat off the land, pose no threat to the natives, and endure months of hardship in their search for the Lost City of Z. They were never seen again. Fawcett’s daily dispatches trickled to a stop. Months passed with no word. Because he had survived several similar forays into the Amazon, his family and friends considered him to be near super-human. As before, they expected Fawcett to stumble out of the jungle, bearded and emaciated and announcing some fantastic discovery. It did not happen. Over the years, the search for Fawcett became more alluring than the search for El Dorado itself. Rescue efforts, from the serious to the farcical, materialized in the years that followed, and hundreds of others lost their lives in the search. Rewards were posted. Psychics were brought in by the family. Articles and books were written. For decades the legend of Percy Fawcett refused to die. The great mystery of what happened to Fawcett has never been solved, perhaps until now. In 2004, author David Grann discovered the story while researching another one. Soon, like hundreds before him, he became obsessed with the legend of the colorful adventurer and his baffling disappearance. Grann, a lifelong New Yorker with an admitted aversion to camping and mountain climbing, a lousy sense of direction, and an affinity for take-out food and air conditioning, soon found himself in the jungles of the Amazon. What he found there, some 80 years after Fawcett’s disappearance, is a startling conclusion to this absorbing narrative. The Lost City of Z is a riveting, exciting and thoroughly compelling tale of adventure. (Photo © Maki Galimberti) A Q&A with Author David Grann Question: When did you first stumble upon the story of Percy Fawcett and his search for an ancient civilization in the Amazon—and when did you realize this particular story had you in “the grip”? David Grann: While I was researching a story on the mysterious death of the world’s greatest Sherlock Holmes expert, I came upon a reference to Fawcett’s role in inspiring Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel The Lost World. Curious, I plugged Fawcett’s name into a newspaper database and was amazed by the headlines that appeared, including “THREE MEN FACE CANNIBALS IN RELIC QUEST” and tribesmen “Seize Movie Actor Seeking to Rescue Fawcett.” As I read each story, I became more and more curious--about how Fawcett’s quest for a lost city and his disappearance had captivated the world; how for decades hundreds of scientists and explorers had tried to find evidence of Fawcett’s missing party and the City of Z; and how countless seekers had disappeared or died from starvation, diseases, attacks by wild animals, or poisonous arrows. What intrigued me most, though, was the notion of Z. For years most scientists had considered the brutal conditions in the largest jungle in the world inimical to humankind, but more recently some archeologists had begun to question this longstanding view and believed that a sophisticated civilization like Z might have existed. Such a discovery would challenge virtually everything that was believed about the nature of the Amazon and what the Americas looked liked before the arrival of Christopher Columbus. Suddenly, the story had every tantalizing element--mystery, obsession, death, madness--as well as great intellectual stakes. Still, I probably didn’t realize I was fully in the story’s “grip” until I told my wife that I planned to take out an extra life insurance policy and follow Fawcett’s trail into the Amazon. Q: Tell us about the discovery of Fawcett’s previously unpublished diaries and logbooks. DG: Researching the book often felt like a kind of treasure hunt and nothing was more exciting than coming across these materials in an old chest in the house of one of Fawcett’s grandchildren. Fawcett, who had been a British spy, was extremely secretive about his search for Z--in part because he didn’t want his rivals to discover the lost city before he did and in part because he feared that too many people would die if they tried to follow in his wake. These old, crumbling diaries and logbooks held incredible clues to both Fawcett’s life and death; what’s more, they revealed a key to his clandestine route to the Lost City of Z. Q: In an attempt to retrace Fawcett’s journey, many scientists and explorers have faced madness, kidnapping, and death. Did you ever hesitate to go to the Amazon? DG: I probably should have been more hesitant, especially after reading some of the diaries of members of other parties that had scoured the Amazon for a lost city. One seeker of El Dorado described reaching a state of “privation so great that we were eating nothing but leather, belts and soles of shoes, cooked with certain herbs, with the result that so great was our weakness that we could not remain standing.” In that expedition alone, some four thousand men perished. Other explorers resorted to cannibalism. One searcher went so mad he stabbed his own child, whispering, “Commend thyself to God, my daughter, for I am about to kill thee.” But to be honest, even after reading these accounts, I was so consumed by the story that I did not think much about the consequences--and one of the themes I try to explore in the book is the lethal nature of obsession. Q: When you were separated from your guide Paolo on the way to the Kuikuro village and seemingly lost and alone in the jungle, what was going through your mind? DG: Besides fear, I kept wondering what the hell I was doing on such a mad quest. Q: Paolo and you made a game of imagining what happened to Fawcett in the Amazon. Without giving anything away about The Lost City of Z, I was wondering if you came away with any final conclusions? DG: I don’t want to give too much away; but, after poring over Fawcett’s final letters and dispatches from the expedition and after interviewing many of the tribes that Fawcett himself had encountered, I felt as if I had come as close as possible to knowing why Fawcett and his party vanished. Q: In his praise for your book, Malcolm Gladwell asks a “central question of our age”: “In the battle between man and a hostile environment, who wins?” Obviously, the jungle has won many times, but it seems man may be gaining. What are your thoughts on the deforestation taking place in the Amazon? DG: It is a great tragedy. Over the last four decades in Brazil alone, the Amazon has lost some two hundred and seventy thousand square miles of its original forest cover--an area bigger than France. Many tribes, including some I visited, are being threatened with extinction. Countless animals and plants, many of them with potential medicinal purposes, are also vanishing. One of the things that the book explores is how early Native American societies were often able to overcome their hostile environment without destroying it. Unfortunately, that has not been the case with the latest wave of trespassers. Q: You began this journey as a man who doesn’t like to camp and has “a terrible sense of direction and tend[s] to forget where [you are] on the subway and miss[es] [your] stop in Brooklyn.” Are you now an avid outdoorsman? DG: No. Once was enough for me! Q: Early in the book, you write, “Ever since I was young, I’ve been drawn to mystery and adventure tales.” What have been some of your favorite books--past and present--that fall into this category? DG: I’m a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, and every few years go back and read the stories again. I do the same with many of Joseph Conrad’s novels, including Lord Jim. I’m always amazed at how he produced quest novels that reflected the Victorian era and yet seem to have been written with the wisdom of a historian looking back in time. As for more contemporary authors, I read a lot of crime fiction, especially the works of George Pelecanos and Michael Connelly. I also relish books, such as Jonathan Lethem’s Motherless Brooklyn, that cleverly play with this genre. Finally, there are the gripping yarns written by authors like Jon Krakauer and Nathaniel Philbrick-—stories that are all the more spellbinding because they are true. Q: Brad Pitt and Paramount optioned The Lost City of Z in the spring. Any updates? DG: They have hired a screenwriter and director and seem to be moving forward at a good clip. Q: What are you working on now? DG: I recently finished a couple of crime stories for The New Yorker, including one about a Polish author who allegedly committed murder and then left clues about the real crime in his novel. Meanwhile, I’m hoping to find a tantalizing story, like The Lost City of Z, that will lead to a new book. Q: Anything else you’d like to add? DG: Just that I hope that readers will enjoy The Lost City of Z and find the story of Fawcett and his quest as captivating as I did. From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. In 1925, renowned British explorer Col. Percy Harrison Fawcett embarked on a much publicized search to find the city of Z, site of an ancient Amazonian civilization that may or may not have existed. Fawcett, along with his grown son Jack, never returned, but that didn't stop countless others, including actors, college professors and well-funded explorers from venturing into the jungle to find Fawcett or the city. Among the wannabe explorers is Grann, a staff writer for the New Yorker, who has bad eyes and a worse sense of direction. He became interested in Fawcett while researching another story, eventually venturing into the Amazon to satisfy his all-consuming curiosity about the explorer and his fatal mission. Largely about Fawcett, the book examines the stranglehold of passion as Grann's vigorous research mirrors Fawcett's obsession with uncovering the mysteries of the jungle. By interweaving the great story of Fawcett with his own investigative escapades in South America and Britain, Grann provides an in-depth, captivating character study that has the relentless energy of a classic adventure tale. I loved reading this book because of its diversity. You get a well rounded history from multiple accounts of the many cursed expeditions into the Amazon. The crazy men who dared to do it (both present and past), violent tribal peoples (though you understand why they're so hostile to foreigners), the nearly impassable Amazon terrain, the odd and bizarre creatures that reside their, and in the end, a plausible archaeologically based theory behind why people thought there was a large rich city once in the Amazon. Like all things, people's imaginations run wild, but the author also brings you back down the earth with the reality of the jungle which left me with the overall conclusion that these grandiose theories of a Lost City of Z were really just grand exaggerations of much more practical evidence of a fairly developed, but long lost, past civilization. Some people criticize the book for only getting to the final expedition at the very end of the book. But I believe this criticism is unwarranted. You can't just jump into the final expedition without getting the backstory and context of the people, place, and time. I feel the author did a marvelous job of jumping around and pacing the book, so that when you get to the final expedition, you're well versed in the context and prepared to understand why things went down the way they did.Fantastic read, and I shall keep this book as a permanent fixture in my collection. Too bad I only got it in paperback... dang.

I ordered this novel after reading "The Lost City Of The Monkey God: A True Story" by Douglas Preston. Several reviewers of Mr. Preston's book referred "The Lost City Of Z" as being quite a bit better and more true to what has been regarded as classic archaeology. After reading "Z" I have to agree with those reviewers. This novel is mainly concerned with the exploration of the Amazon region in the early 1900's, with the technology of boat motors, airplanes, and short wave radio just beginning to be utilized. "Monkey God" is set in today's time and the explorers have new and up-to-date technology available to help them locate and analyze the ruins that they were searching for. However, Douglas Preston's story feels more 'human' and draws you in from the descriptions of the various obstacles encountered and (sometimes) overcome. His first person descriptions of what he and his team went through take you right into the heart of their group. You encounter the rain, insects, snakes, diseases, and other hardships that they experience. It feels personal, actually uncomfortably personal, making it too easy to put yourself in their shoes and put their pain and discomfort on your own shoulders. Reading "Z" was like watching a National Geographic special. Reading "Monkey God" was like watching (and experiencing) the difficulties constantly encountered by participants on the TV show "Naked and Afraid".It took me a while to get into the rhythm of "The Lost City Of Z" because of the shifting perspectives and time frames. David Grann obviously did a lot of research and utilized many different resources in order to compile a lot of factual and interesting information pertinent to the travails of Percy Fawcett while searching for his 'holy grail'. Colonel Fawcett is to be commended for his drive, intelligence, and physical abilities in being able to challenge such difficult conditions over and over again. His accomplishments in helping to map previously unexplored regions are surprising and extremely admirable considering the myriad obstacles encountered.Unfortunately, while each has its place, "Z" reads more like a history book while "Monkey God" is a living and breathing adventure. Each to his own.

I found this book interesting in many ways. It was easy to read since it touched many subjects that are familiar to me. The book covers historic facts of the Victorian age and its influence in the world but specially South America and the countries of Bolivia and Brazil whose Amazonian region was and is difficult to explore or study. It is well balanced since the book covers many areas that help understand different points of view of previous times compared to present times. I found answers to questions that come up as you read this book. For instance, to refer to the tribes that populate the Amazonian forests as savages, made me question who is anyone to judge, specially after the atrocities of WWI, described in the book as well as all the inhuman spectacle of WW2. Also, it explains what was happening in the areas related to the fields he got to be involved in like archeology and the discovery of Machu Pichu which may have influenced him.Fawcett’s motivations could have been banal if they were glory or becoming famous but he showed an ethical position not usual in his time which was to approach the indigenous people in a non violent way, trying not to use arms and ordering to drop arms even if danger was felt. He would raise his hands and confront the Indians which gave him good results since he got to be treated as a sort of friend. This respectful behavior, considering the times, was something positive to take in account when trying to define Fawcett's personality which could show his humanity, something to learn from him. Now, consider that Indiana Jones is partly based in the real life of Percy Fawcett and P.F. is one of the characters of one of his movies; however, Indiana Jones had no problem in shooting for entertainment.Having lived in Bolivia and having done some exploration myself I may have a different take to this adventure. To start, one of Fawcett's motivation was as normal as to answer why people climb mountains, the answer is,” because it's there". I have done hiking going from La Paz at 12000 ft. above sea level to about 15000 ft. and then down to the tropics of Yungas which is the start of the Amazonian jungle all along an Inca road which was partly well preserved considering hundreds of years of use. After getting familiar with this subtropical region, it happened that I read The mines of King Salomon and this book, cited in Grann's book as well, inspired me to go farther. My plan was to go to an uncharted area in the forest called Madidi, which is a national park now. My motivation was just to see what no one else has seen. I was able to enlist two university friends who seemed interested but who back down at the last minute. Next year I tried again but I had a sudden back ache problem. Going back to the book, Fawcett's intentions may have been to attain fame by finding not El Dorado but something like Machu Pichu which was “found” in 1911. He visited Cusco and Tiahuanacu and was able to marvel at the achievements of these civilizations. But destiny put him in the Bolivian jungle with the aid of the British government, it wasn't something that he was looking for but that opened his eyes and his innate explorer spirit. Before I even finished reading this book I was compelled to read about the original source, Percy Fawcett's own words, compiled in a book “Lost trail, lost cities” by Brian Fawcett, his son. By reading it, I found out that in his first trip he was hired by the Bolivian government, P. Fawcett does not mention Brazil in the first expedition which was actually work. Now, there are historical details that are not clear. The border problem between Bolivia and Brazil was already established in 1903 after a short war between these two countries and the result was the annexation of the Acre, an area of 190,000 square Kilometers (75,000 sq mls), more than ¾ the size of UK. By the way, something that this book could have in next edition is a better map, the map of Bolivia is not clear. There are details in the Fawcett's book that could have been part of Grann's book or even the movie, like the moment when, after departing La Paz, one of many mules P.F. had, runs away and that was the mule that had the $£1000 in gold he received as part of the payment from the Bolivian government, an interesting historical detail, a “jingling treasure” in the saddle bags. However, Fawcett explains that the mule was brought back by local people who he rewarded. P .F. describes foreigners by name but there is no mention of Bolivian dignitaries with the exception of the president of Bolivia who was taking matters with his own hands and who knew these lands very well. The region next to the Brazilian border bears his name, Pando.“All who have lived in these lands and learned to know them fell captive to their irresistible charm”, Fawcett writes as part of his reflexions. Is this one of the motives he kept coming back?

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—This basic overview of philosophy will draw readers in with its dynamic design, starting with the eye-catching cover, which includes quotes such as René Descartes's famous "I think, therefore I am" to pique interest. The book starts with a brief introduction and a chart that answers the question "What Do Philosophers Do?" Weeks organizes the material thematically by the branch of philosophy being highlighted ("What Is Reasoning?," "What Is the Mind?"), making the text ideal for browsing. Each section uses different font sizes, graphics and images, sidebars, and inset text boxes, enabling the author to convey a great deal of information without overwhelming readers. Weeks also integrates biographical sketches of selected male and female philosophers (Socrates, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Hannah Ardent) with intriguing facts about each figure and their personal struggles, which makes the subject much more engaging for students. The text becomes repetitive at times, particularly in the first two chapters. However, Weeks maintains interest overall. A directory of famous philosophers is included, but there is no bibliography. A solid introduction to the subject.—Hilary Writt, Sullivan University, Lexington, KYp

This book is very readable and reinforced my knowledge of the history of western philosophy. Since I constantly need refreshing on philosophical school of thought, I will refer back to this book from time to time. This book was well worth the money and I'm going to hang onto it.

A very good introduction to a difficult subject. I've been reading philosophy for thirty+ years and still found it enjoyable.

It's fun to read and covers a lot of ground, but not as deeply as "The Philosophy Book" from the same publisher.

Great little book giving a brief overview of various aspects and insight into philosophy. Wonderful resource.

I LIKED THE approach to the big questions. But the book needs to splain why they are important. Or is that another book?

Incredibly boring and incredibly profound. Go figure!

Exceptional book. Not for a casual reader but underpinnings are Political Science so it breaks things down in an orderly, deeply explained manner. Examples used are based up to the late 20th century when the book was written. The book still applies to current world situations but reader is left to make those connections on their own.

Leadership is a secondary source history/political science book drawing on historical examples, psychology, and some philosophical concepts on governance. Burns goal with the book is to establish a foundation for the study of leadership, combining the studies of the leaders themselves and the followers. It covers the individual traits of leaders, their relationship to followers, and how they managed to accomplish great things or have such great impact. This textbook has a number of stylistic problems that make it difficult to read, despite its interesting substance. Its organization is shaky and many of the chapters and sections have no clear intro or conclusion to tie his thesis together. The book is a dry, boring read that meanders between secondary sources, historical anecdotes, and the author's own biased perceptions.Burns seems to be trying to place a lateral beam across several pillars with his leadership school. This isn't nearly as groundbreaking as the blurbs on the back of the book claim. Burns' conclusions are limited in scope, and don't leave a strong impression on the reader. He overuses Sigmund Freud, conceding that psychoanalysis of historical figures is not particularly accurate or helpful, then goes forward and uses it anyway. He identifies few patterns, constantly going back to the same old "blame the parents" approach to psychoanalysis. His occasional delving into the sexual habits of famous leaders was purely conjecture and not worthy of this text.Burns narration of historical events and the rise of certain leaders is mediocre. It isn't heavy on detail, yet the prose is still difficult to follow. The historical examples do not clearly demonstrate his thesis. He provides limit context, assuming the reader is fully apprised of the historical events. This is arrogant and lazy. I can only assume the book is meant for a graduate-level audience who have strong backgrounds in history and political science. It certainly wasn't marketed this way (Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award).Burns take on Mao Zedong was troubling to me. In Mao's case, his leadership ended when he took power at which point he became a tyrant. By Burns own admission, a tyranny is not leadership. He speaks glowingly of these revolutions despite the bloodshed, poverty, misery, and war it brought to the respective countries. His positive view of the Cultural Revolution in China is absolutely stunning, ignoring its atrocities and utter failure. The book was published in 1978, so some of these events were contemporary. We know more today about the Soviet Union and the experiences of Communist China in the 20th century. It is fair to say Burns was very wrong in his opinion of these two political systems and their relevance to his school of leadership. The other sections are much better. Why give it 3 stars with all these problems? Burns combines multiple disciplines for a fairly reasonable case against compartmentalizing social sciences (this was his implicit objective). His study of leadership became the basis for later works, especially those covering popular and business leadership. Finally, I for the most part agree with his primary thesis and the supporting definitions early in the book. So it gets an average grade from me.

Nearly 40 years old, the book is still the gold standard for leadership and power studies. Looking at multiple leaders and leadership styles, Burns brings a readability and scholarly rigor to the topic. A must read.

A classic that really booted up the transformation leadership movement. I liked it so much that I purchased it in hardbound.

The world of leadership is examined through a sweeping assessment on its power and purpose to its origins in James MacGregor Burns's book, Leadership. This book is a very comprehensive overview of the study of leadership as it distinguishes not only what are the two basic styles of leadership: transforming and transactional, but evaluates the theory and practice of leadership skills as well. Burns stated in Leadership, "I define leadership as leaders inducing followers to act for certain goals that represent the values and the motivations¬-the wants and needs, the aspirations and expectations-of both leaders and followers" (19). Throughout the book, Burns discussed the leadership styles of political leaders to religious and social leaders. From Martin Luther King, Jr to Moses to Mahatma Gandhi to Napoleon, plus Machiavelli and even Adolf Hitler, Burns cited how these leaders made vital distinctions between wants and needs. According to Burns, "the process of leadership must be seen as part of the dynamics of conflict and of power; that leadership is nothing if not linked to collective purpose; that the effectiveness of leaders must be judged not by their press clippings but by actual social change measured by intent and by the satisfaction of human needs and expectations" (3).

Burns is a great writer. He knows how to express the essence of his thoughts and opinions on a topic that is familiar to most readers but not always completely understood. Through well recognized leaders, Burns provides examples and insights of leadership.

A seminal work. Also read Joseph Rost's classic book, "Leadership for the Twenty-First Century."

This e-book, written by lawyer-turned-SAHM/homeschool mom, Elizabeth Phillips, is excellent.Homeschooling in Pennsylvania: How to Comply with the Law in 8 Easy Steps describes the varying laws associated with homeschooling in Pennsylvania. The book is written in an easy-to-understand format (in other words, no legalese). Ms. Phillips explains everything from affidavits to evaluations in just the right amount of detail. Plus, if you have any additional questions the author has included a link to her wonderful website.I am very impressed. So many people say homeschooling in Pennsylvania is difficult -- once they read this e-book and learn the ins and outs of the laws, they'll be able to proceed with confidence.Plus, homeschooling is a lot more fun when everyone (including mom and dad) can relax!

I homeschooled my boys and now I am helping with my grandchildren. I wish I would have had a copy of this back in the day!Facts about the homeschool law, simple and clear. I did have a question that pertained to our situation that I couldn't figure out and so, after emailing Mrs. Phillips my question was answered by email. Thank you, Elizabeth Phillips, for such a helpful book even for those of us that have been at it for awhile! Highly recommend for anyone thinking about homeschool, and for those that are knee deep into the education of their children (or grandchildren!)

This book is very helpful to anyone who plans to homeschool their child(ren) in PA. Elizabeth Phillips made the book easy to follow and offers insight to the PA homeschool laws. I will be sure to recommend it to other parents.

If you are thinking of homeschooling in Pennsylvania, or currently doing so, and want to comply with all state laws, this book is a valuable resource. If you feel intimidated by the rules related to homeschooling in PA, get this book now! Elizabeth is a lawyer and dedicated homeschooling parent and explains the necessary steps in a way easy to understand and implement. There is a companion web site with sample forms to make the process even easier.Homeschooling rules may seem to be a complicated process. Elizabeth removes the mystery and provides facts and insights to proceed with confidence. In effect, notification to school district can be completed with 1-2 page document that include an affidavit, a list of objective per academic subject, and a statement from evaluator that student is making adequate progress. It is not difficult to do but this book will help to ensure you cover all your bases without stress. As a former teacher, I can attest the public schools range from good to decent to awful, understaffed and underfunded. This book is a great resource for those who recognize this reality, and decide to take a more active role in their child's education.

The book is easy to read and understand. When I bought the ebook I was of the mindset that homeschooling would be difficult due to PA's strict laws. This book lays it all out in easy to follow steps, complete with resources on the website. I am now confident that I can homeschool with complete compliance!

This e-book saved us so much time and anxiety. Everything is organized and explained extremely clearly. I followed her format suggestions for the affidavit and the list of objectives and the Homeschool Office accepted them without a problem.(For anyone living in Pittsburgh, that's where the paperwork is submitted. I spoke to multiple people trying to figure out where to send the materials before someone mentioned it, and couldn't find any information about it on the Pittsburgh Public Schools' website.)Now that we've made it past the initial steps in the process, I'll be turning to Phillips' book again for information about setting up a portfolio.I highly recommend this book.

It will be a great help.

I just read through this e-book and must say it was a quick read with pinpoint instructions on what to do in PA for homeschooling paperwork. It was in Laymen's terms just as it said it would be.Thank you!

My best friend’s mom gave her this book when she was in her early 20s. We used to read it and laugh at the detailed sexual preferences of each sign. Now that I am a 40 yr old woman, I missed this book and all the fun we had with it. So I ordered one for myself. I now find the details of each signs personality, sexual behaviors, and relationships among other signs to be shockingly accurate! I’m not so sure about some of the more raunchy and sadistic sexual fantasies described for some signs. But all the other information is super on point. An enlightening and entertaining read!

I was fooled by the positive reviews but should have known better since I know enough to know that one's sign is also affected by one's rising and moon sign. This book was dead wrong about my sexual likes and proclivities. According to this book, I like rubbing honey and wine on my man's penis--who does this? Also, I'm supposed to like it when a guy brings out my maternal side in the bedroom--so not true. My favorite position is supposed to be from behind. Dead wrong again. Also, for some of the other signs contradictions abound. For example, one sign is described as "possessive" but okay with infidelity. It's all over the place.

I remember reading this book in the early 1980's, a friend had it. . Printed in 1976 a great forgotten book on Sexual Astrology! They dont write them like they used too......Also remembering how very close they got it right about My sign, so much so, that 30 years later I wondered if i could still get a copy for myself, and here it is....woohoooThis 37 year old copy I got, looks New.. and i enjoyed spending hours reading about My sign, and all the others of people i know. This would be a Great party event, this book and friends hanging out, and reading each others sexual fanticies that they might not even know they have hahaha watching each other blush.... fun! This book is more then a party topic, it can help you understand More about yourself, or your partner/s. Opening a deep seated feeling/s that you always wondered about but didnt know where to find it, or answer some questions about yourself/partner you didnt know how to ask. I know it did for Me.When you meet someone new, and you find out when they were born, you can read about them. Like how to get on the good side, first moves to make to your/both advantage. It gives you an idea of, can I get along with this sign? In the long haul? This would be My concern if i liked someone and want to get closer. The book covers Each Sign with, Her sign, Her sex life...His sign, His sex life..the first moves to make, and not to make, Erogenous Zones, where to touch them, Last Moves, how to get out, then it goes on with a paragraph of each sign with each sign, exp. cancer with taurus, gives an idea of how these 2 signs can get along intimitly and in a relationship. Some say, Take a grain of salt when it comes to Astrology, its for entertainment only... but i have to say this book gets it pretty close to the core. As with Each sign, not All of the people sharing the same sign are alike, but thats the fun of life, to find out!I dont know if this book was even reprinted, but it needs to be done! I am just happy i was able to find a copy of it for my very own!

This is the third copy I've owned of this book. Its a great tool to use. I keep loaning the book out and it never gets returned! The book has been around for a long time and its pretty accurate (taking into consideration that other factors shape who people are.)

I had this book about 10 years ago and someone borrowed it and never gave it back. I'm glad that I was able to find it on Amazon. Although it was written some years ago I still find that the descriptions are still true today. Yes, you do pick & control your destiny in the long run; but this book provides a little bit of (naughty) fun along the way. And I'm a Capricorn woman & they were pretty accurate about me.

I stumbled across this little book in a bookstore while I was still working traveling around the country. I brought it along to work and left it next to my workstation and within minutes the entire office was reading it. So I left it when I left and got another copy and the same thing happened at the next place. I don't know how many copies I've gifted over the years, but it would have been cheaper if I'd bought a case. Like all of these sorts of books they're very accurate in enough places for everyone to have a good laugh.

This is the best Sexual Astrology book in the world! I would say that overall , the characteristics of personality and sexual compatibility are at least 98% correct about you and the people you know. On the sign compatibility , I swear you can look back at all your past relationships and say 'Yep, that is EXACTLY how it was'. I don't know how many times I've replaced this book since my friend turned me on to it like thirteen years ago . Most of these astrology books are corny and recycled , Martines' is the real deal. .

It's okay. Not really something you can just skim through. I like things to be a little more laid out and informative at a glance when it comes to this stuff. Not bad though just different than what I was expecting.

I may have read this book on its own merits, but what really sold me was that Cut & Run is so amazingly awesome, I thought I'd give Nick and Kelly a try (and hope to have as much Ty and Zane in their books as Nick and Kelly are in Cut & Run). Going in, I already had some history on Nick and Kelly, but most of that history was annoyance that they had taken up so much space in Cut & Run.I really liked the first half of Cross & Crown. I was intrigued by Nick and his dominant nature, "Nick was about as alpha top as a man could get". I wanted to see that, but this book didn't show much of that side of him. For example, a good lead up would get started and then.....details are skipped and it's the next day and you really don't know what happened. There's a comment about Nick's dominating behavior from Nick's partner Hagen, and a few from Kelly, but little action to support it. I did think Kelly was a lot stronger in this book. In the past he's come across as more of a sidekick to Nick. Sadly, Zane and Ty do not make an appearance. There is a phone call with each of them, which I loved and they are mentioned a few times, but that's it. Just like other Cut & Run fans, I crave more of Ty and Zane. Can't get enough.Nick and Kelly are way more open about their relationship then Ty and Zane. Nick has no qualms about kissing Kelly in front of co-workers or in front of anyone else. JD included. There were several moments that I thoroughly enjoyed. The blurb suggested more interference with Nick's "feelings" for JD than I thought there actually was. Nick doesn't hesitate turning JD down in favor of Kelly. It was a non-issue for me.I get a little tired of all the history in Abigail's books and found myself skipping parts of this book. I didn't skip similar parts in Cut & Run, because I didn't want to miss anything whatsoever that was happening in that series. I keep mentioning Cut & Run because it's easy to think of the two series as one, since Nick and Kelly are prevalent in several books from Cut & Run. I think anyone reading this series should first read about Nick and Kelly's in Cut & Run, which I think their first appearance is in book 4, Divide & Conquer, and they are also heavily featured in books 7, 8 and 9. Shock & Awe (Sidewinder series book 1) takes place immediately following the trip to New Orleans in Touch & Geaux (book 7 of Cut & Run). Sorry for all the confusion mentioning both series, but they are heavily entwined.I probably would have given this 5 stars, but I kept expecting to see more intimate scenes like in Cut & Run (which were epic). I wanted to see that side of Nick and I didn't get it.

This was FUN O(≧∇≦)OHot, sexy, alpha men, a treasure hunt, a piece of (hopefully accurate) American history, an Irish treasure… an Irish anything, really!Damn that accent is HOT, gets me every time! Yea, got the audiobook and man was that awesome. Also that Boston swagger, fcking delicious.Totally solid book 2, will read again for sure (also just FYI there’s some connection to the Cut & Run series happening, so you might want to read that first to fully get the background story here… not absolutely necessary though, just easier to get in on everything)♡o。.(✿ฺ。 ✿ฺ)

I liked C & C but I didn't love it. I like Nick and Kelly as characters and think they have good chemistry together. I like them even better in their own book instead of taking equal billing in a Cut & Run book. Unfortunately I would have liked more relationship development and less treasure hunting mystery man with amnesia plot line. And while they have great chemistry - the interrupted intimacy trope - really? Again? What's the point - I think it's just as annoying to read as it is to experience.Julian was a very small part of the story and Cameron, aside from being the kidnappee, was pretty much non-existent (which was OK with me because I'm not a Cameron fan, I'm more in the "What does he see in him"???? camp). For the rabid Ty and Zane fans - there's one Kelly/Zane snarky phone call; one Nick and Ty angsty - our friendship is still fractured phone call and one funny Julian mentioning Ty. Other than that - apparently the whole "crossover" thing only goes one way.

This review is for the Cut and Run and Sidewinder books as they go together. If it were possible I would rate these books 10. If you are looking for suspense, laughter, love and mateship go no further, these books had me from the start, in fact I've read then all a second time because I couldn't get enough. Try and Zane are 2 strong Alpha males that believe in the truth and honour; Nick and Kelly were great as well. The entire cast of of characters were really good they fit in with the story so well. I laughed, I cried and I fell in love with these hard men. These men have strengthen my belief that true family is stronger then blood. I loved these books and I hope there are more to come, give yourself a break read them and join these guys on a ride of a lifetime.

I enjoyed Cross & Crown tremendously. Have to admit i was sorry Julian Cross & Cameron weren't included in more of the storyline. Julian wasn't quite the badass i expected him to be in this book. He was more of a "Don't mess with me kind of a guy in Warrior's Cross." I have read and collected the complete Cut & Run series, along with The Warrior's Cross novel. They will never leave my bookshelf. Only to reread. I do hope Ms. Roux is able to continue with more of the Cut & Run series. I hate to lose touch with any of these wonderful characters. Nick & Kelly make a terrfic couple.Ty & Zane are favorites of mine and would love to read more about how their relationship is going. I would also like to see her wonderful imagination find it's way into another novel with the cast from Warrior's Cross. I think Abigail Roux is one of the top authors in this genre. I don't usually gives reviews, but when a paticular book holds my interest over and over again i think the author deserves to be congratulated in print. So thank you Ms. Roux for giving fans of the Cut & run series another chance to enjoy your talent. Keep writing, and I'll keep reading.
