I found the information in the book very informative. This book brought to light many of the inaccuracies of the 1948 senatorial election between LBJ and Coke Stevenson. A very fast read for history buffs and Texas political history. This is the second time I have read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it again.

This is an accurate account of the Parr family written from from the federal prosecutors viewpoint. The Parr's, Archer, George and Archie stole from public funds. They enriched them selves personally at the expense of poor Mexican-Americans. The author says they stole one half of the funds from the Benavides school district. I wonder what kind of education those children got! The tax rate in Duval County was astronomical so they could steal from public funds.Their whole tenure was disgraceful.

Growing up in South Texas, I had always heard of the Parr family and knew a little bit about them, but this really was a comprehensive read of all that went on in Duval county. Excellent!

I'm a south Texan who found this one fascinating. It relates tidbits of history, but is not meant to be a history book in the classic sense. It is written as investigative reportage with incidental courtroom drama. The focus is on the final chapters in the political life of George Parr. The author was one of the chief investigators, a federal prosecutor who eventually gathered enough evidence to indict and to convict George Parr. "The Fall..." is very well written, a pleasure to read.

This book is an outstanding journal of the "Duke of Duval"George Parr. Parr had made his mark on history by determiningthe final outcome of the 1948 Senate election in Texas. Thanks tohis efforts Lyndon Johnson emerged the winner by an 80 vote margin. This book details how George Parr was finally brought tojustice. You have details of the investigation that resulted in the sucessful prosecution of The "Duke of Duval" and several ofhis associates. The details of his downfall will prove to be veryinteresting. You will also understand the dominant role that the"Duke of Duval" had in Texas politics. This is an excellent read.You will not be dissapointed.

The Duke of Duval reigned supreme in his South Texas domain in the 1930's while I was in early school years in Corpus Christi, Texas near Duval and Jim Wells Counties. Many people knew what was going on in Duval County since businessmen from Corpus Christi, including my father Clinton E. Smith, CPA, interfaced with George Parr's regime in their normal business dealings.I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Clark, the author of The Fall of the Duke of Duval at a book signing event at the small library at San Diego, Texas on March 2, 1996. Several hundred copies were signed that day. Mr. Clark's short message was to recognize and help prevent it all from happening again. While at the event, I had occasion to talk to the current Mayor of San Diego, TX and he quietly said to me about the book, its only the tip of the iceberg.George Berham Parr changed U.S. history by orchestrating a vote fraud that caused Lyndon B. Johnson to become a U.S. Senator and later a good candidate for Vice President with Kennedy to help get southern votes. Many Texans never thought of Johnson as presidential material and after two Kennedy terms LBJ would have been too old to run effectively.But The Duke of Duval made it happen, leading eventually to LBJ's starting programs that today have been bloated by beltway politicians until they are about to bankrupt the country and destroy our culture.The speech in Mr. Clark's book, delivered by Mr. Josh Groce, a San Antonio attorney, should be MUST reading for any student of history.

I don't due encomiums very often (check out the rest of my reviews); but Rath & Strong's pocket guide simply floored me.I bought a dozen several months ago to try out on my black belts and green belts. They snapped them up and refused to return them. My own copy is already dog-eared and tattered from overuse.This is a wonderful tool. It breaks down the methodology in clear, concise steps and provides a desperately-needed matrix showing which tools are typically employed at each phase. It offers short, effective descriptions of the most commonly-used tools.As someone who'd been given to lugging Breyfogle's "Implementing Six Sigma" to meetings, Rath & Strong's guide has been a welcome relief.Pick yours up today.

I have used this guide for years. I first started using the pocket guides from GOAL and still value them, but this is my favorite six sigma guide. I especially like the way the tools are mapped to the phase of DMAIC.

Probably a half of all the books I review are in the area of psychology, spiritual formation, brain research and spiritual growth. So I was glad to get the recommendation of this book, Care of Souls by David Benner, for review. I was surprised to discover it’s a 1998 book, but recognized that Benner is one of the classic contributors in the field of soul care. His insights are invaluable for anyone concerned with people’s total well-being. The book is divided into two sections: understanding soul care, and giving and receiving soul care. In the first section Benner notes the salient differences between psychology and Christian theology, and the ways in which those two disciplines in the West have complemented and sometimes actually contradicted each other. He describes various aspects of Christian spirituality, what he calls “psycho-spiritual thinking,” and the rise of therapeutic thinking from many contributors in the field of soul care. He maintains that the care of souls from a Christian perspective involves what we do for each other, not for ourselves, within a moral context, in community, through dialogue focused on the well-being of the whole person. The second half of the book details what dialogue actually is in soul care, the distinctives of various practitioners involved in soul care, and the boundaries and challenges for care-givers.The book has a decidedly academic focus, and is far from an easy read. But I highly recommend it for all those involved in Christian counseling, Christian nurture, spiritual formation, and the healthy integration of psychology and Christian thinking in the care of souls. 5 stars M.L. One distinctive of biblical faith is that each human being is created in the image of God (Gen 1:27). One practical implication of this image doctrine is that when you speak with someone, it is like speaking to God himself. In fact, many times God speaks to us through the people around us. A second practical implication is that each and every human has intrinsic value in the eyes of God[1]. Between the hint of the divine and this intrinsic value, every individual has an interesting story to tell—if one takes the time to listen.In his book, Care of Souls, David Benner implicitly understands and accepts the doctrine of the image. He writes:“Care refers to actions that are designed to support the well-being of something or someone. Cure refers to actions that are designed to restore well-being that has been lost.” (21)One only cares for something of value. In this case, we are talking about souls which he defines as:“soul as referring to the whole person, including the body, but with particular focus on the inner world of thinking, feeling, and willing.” (22)This is the Hebrew understanding of soul (nefesh or × Ö·×¤Ö°×©×Ö´Ö–×™) which is quite distinct from the Greek understanding from Plato which divided a person into body and soul[1], which were truly divided (11).This body and soul unity is important in Benner’s thinking especially when he delves into the distinction between the conscious and non-conscious parts of our inner life. He writes:“Caring for souls is caring for people in ways that not only acknowledge them as persons but also engage and address them in the deepest and most profoundly human aspects of their lives. This is the reason for the priority of the spiritual and psychological aspects of the person’s inner world in soul care.” (23)While the cure of souls focuses on remedy for sin; care of souls focuses on the need for spiritual growth (28).Benner sees 4 elements in care of souls:Healing—“helping others overcome some impairment and move towards wholeness”,Sustaining—“acts of caring designed to help a hurting person endure and transcend” a challenging situation,Reconciling—“efforts to reestablish broken relationships”, andGuiding—“helping people make wise choices and thereby grow in spiritual maturity” (31-32)I used to use the analogy of two teammates in soccer game working with each other to succeed in their game play.Benner offers 6 helpful principles (he calls them conclusions) defining soul care. “Christian soul care”…1. “is something that we do for each other, not to ourselves.”2. “operates within a moral context.”3. “is concerned about community not just individuals.”4. “is normally provided through the medium of dialogue within the context of a relationship.”5. “does not focus on some narrow spiritual aspect of personality but addresses the whole person.”6. “is much too important to be restricted to the clergy or any other single group of people.” This last point is important—the idea of Christian friends is fundamental in Christian discipling. In fact, the first book by Benner that I read and reviewed was focused on this point[2].Another key point is that the focus in care of souls is on dialogue between equals before God. Benner distinguishes 4 types of interpersonal discourse:1. Debate—“a civilized form of combat…has a focus and implicit rules that encourage participants to stick to the understood topic”. (134)2. Discussion—“involves the advocacy of ideas and positions with resulting winners and losers” .(134)3. Conversation—“involve the exchange not just of facts and arguments but also of feelings, values, and construals” but not to the extent and with the mutual trust required for a dialogue. (135)4. Dialogue—“shared inquiry that is designed to increase awareness, understanding, and insight” among mutually trusting individuals. (131)This focus on dialogue distinguishes soul care from psychiatric care where true dialogue is not possible, in part, because those talking are inherently not equal—more of doctor-patient conversation. Dialogue is the preferred discourse in soul care because healing, sustaining, reconciling, and guiding are able to take place.Dr. David Benner works and lives in Canada. He describes himself as: "an internationally known depth psychologist, wisdom teacher, transformational coach, and author whose life’s work has been directed toward helping people walk the human path in a deeply spiritual way and the spiritual path in a deeply human way." He has held numerous faculty positions and written about 30 books [4].Benner writes in 11 chapters divided into 2 parts. These chapters are:Part 1: Understanding Soul Care1. What is Soul Care?2. The Rise of Therapeutic Soul Care3. The Boundaries of the Soul4. Psychology and Spirituality5. Christian SpiritualityPart 2: Giving and Receiving Soul Care6. The Psychospiritual Focus and Soul Care7. An excellent read for those who need to know the connecting points between contemporary Christian spirituality, counseling, psychiatry, psychology, psychoanalysis and mentoring with their respective origins and influences. The subject material is thorough enough with sources included for academic use yet accessible enough for the layperson: kudos to the author and editor! Lastly, the last sections of the book bring the content from what was mostly an intellectual overview to a place of practical, relational application.

This book is amazing. It can be a hard read due to the scholarly level. In my case I being exposed to all types of scientific scholarly studies from different fields so I find it fascinating, very realistic and helpful for the new and the not so new pastor or Christian counselor.

I don't normally read a book twice, but since it had been a few months since I read Keri, I decided to read it again and then I read Keri-Karin. These books are so good I read both of them in 3 days. Some people complained about the first book being too long which to me is ridiculous. I was very pleased that Keri wrote the second book as open and honest and in her own way just like she did the first. I must admit I was disappointed that it ended without me finding out how her life has turned out. I guarantee I will be looking for Part II of Keri-Karin as I can't wait to see how her life has turned out. I think she wrote both books with an honesty and straight forwardness, personal flaws and all that I don't think many people could manage. I believe every word she said. It disgust me that so many adults abused her while so many others that knew the truth did nothing. I don't understand why her grandmother didn't kick her mother and brother out of her house and let Keri move in, after all she was still a child. I feel her mother probably slowly took control over her grandmother and her home before her grandmother realized what was really happening. It seems everyone was intimidated by Keri's mother and her fits. I think someone should have given her mother a good butt whooping every day and let her see how if felt. Obviously her mother was extremely jealous of Keri and her good looks. I think her mother did not want to be intimate with Keri's stepfather so for her it was easier for her to let Keri be raped and tormented. If her mother is still living I hope she never, ever sees Keri or her grandchildren since she has no right to call herself a Mother much less a Grandmother. I highly recommend both books. I promise you will not be disappointed. I pray that Keri has found peace and I will be buying Part II when it comes out in 2013.

I have read the first three books in this autobiography of Keri/Karin/Kat's life. I had been watching for more installments for a while, but then got busy with life, and forgot. The other day, somehow, it popped up on my radar. I'm incredibly excited to have the privilege to learn more about the author's life. I was deeply engrossed in the prior books, following along, cheering for her, cursing her mother, and the others who treated this then young girl so unconscionably. I felt as I was right there with her, by the vibrant and detailed explanations of situations and emotions. What an incredibly brave woman, to put her life to pen, exposing herself to the world. I don't know if I could have accomplished this, had I been through what she has, but as her therapist suggested, I'd imagine it would be somewhat cathartic.Stories such as these can be so very painful to read, but i feel compelled to, as it feels as though by doing so, I'm acknowledging what the author has been through. Kat Ward as well as others deserve to have their stories known. They shouldn't be ashamed, which is what keeps many abuse victims silent, suffering on their own. I hope these writings can help others, even if they don't speak out, to at least know they're (sadly) not alone, but also that there are many out there who understand, and care. Obviously what she did in bringing out the truth about "Old Jimmy" helped hundreds of others, and I'm sure she's helped many more.As others have shared, I hope that Kat Ward has been able to find some semblance of peace and happiness in her life, after such a horrendous beginning. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

I hope and pray that something more is done for people who fall between the cracks, like you obviously did. I feel like I know you. I believe you went thru hell and back. Thank God you are here and are able to write your story - I am sure we have all learned something and will be more aware of child abuse and hopefully, we will make a difference in a child's life and not allow the despicable abuse happen to another innocent life. Kats writing continues to entice you with the way Keri's life continues to unfold. The journey is well worth the time it takes to join her. Indeed, Kats writing is above standard, and it lacks the foul words so often associated with books relating such abuse and pain. I personally found this refreshing. Kat refuses to play the victim card all the time. She often lays claim to stupidity on her part for the mistakes one without the baggage she has, might well find normal for one her age. This Part 3 was much easier on the heart but still most difficult to put down. Do continue with me to Part 4. I feel certain we won't be sorry.

This book starts where Keri left off. As Keri goes to yet a new school, home, detention system. She lives with very strict rules. Yet even behind those walls there are some that have access to her and abuse her, again. None the less dear Keri seems to find the inner strength to carry on. She is truly an incredible young lady, and in her book speaks as one friend to another. I am sure if you liked the first book, Keri you will like this one too. Spoiler alert--at least her mother doesn't have access to her to beat her half to death all the time. Keri, you are so brave to write your so engaging books, thank you. I'll be watching for part two!

I rarely write reviews but do so when something is really outstanding and this volume easily fits in that category. I am a new user of the iPhone and purchased it primarily for use of the camera and its many apps. This book is written in a wonderful, casual style. It includes a staggering array of diverse images with general instructions on how he achieved the effects (specific app names are always included in the order they were applied). If you are comfortable learning and navigating new apps, you'll be off quickly and experimenting with his many recommended apps which he details by categories/purposes. If you are not adept at learning apps and all their symbols, etc. (that's me) the tags in this book (there are many of them) let you view brief demonstration tutorials which the author has developed. This feature alone, for me, is worth the price of the book and then some; in just a few minutes I am using apps which would have taken mean a long time to fully understand. Be you knew to the iPhone and slow to learn apps or a long-time user who wants to see and learn how to combine apps into wonderful, evocative images, this is the volume for you.

I got the Kindle version of this "book" and it's so cool! It has a ton of "how to" videos embedded, and I think watching a video about how to use a variety of apps to edit photos is a much easier way to learn than reading steps in a book and trying to duplicate on your phone. In fact I have the book on my phone and I go back and forth between the book, the videos, and the apps, practicing with each one after reading about/seeing it. The author covers a huge variety of excellent photo-editing apps, and the book is well worth the price. I am enjoying it greatly, and surprisingly found out a lot of new details about how to use apps I'd had for a while. Highly recommended!

The book is full of examples, and explains what apps were used and how to create the images. The vidieos, that are numerous throughout the chapters, cover step by step instructions, as well as app reviews that show the different functions of the app. I really appreciated this part of the book the most. Apps seem inexpensive at 99 cents to a few bucks but it can really add up if you are randomly downloading app after app looking for the ones that will do what you want. It's very hard to tell what an app can do from the short blurb they write about them. Watching the vidieos from the book and seeing the features produce the work is invaluable.I recommend this book to anyone starting out with iphoneography, as well as to people who have been at it awhile and feel the need to try something new.

This book was a great overview. He offers a number of apps for each function and tells how they differ. The book also offers a number of exercises which illustrate the way different apps can be used in layers. Just looking at the exercises was enough to get me on my way.I was inspired to go back to content I abandoned in the early 90's when creating multiple images in the camera and darkroom took forever (not being a highly detailed person, I never became became proficient enough with Photoshop to do the job there either). This book kickstarted or rebooted a creative adventure.

My initial reaction to this book is underwhelmed. But I am giving it a bit of leeway because I have just set it aside for now. The way it is organized does not suit me, so I need to re-access when I can sit down with and and give it my undivided attention. When I am looking for inspiration or a tutorial, I like "bites" that I can take and run with, then return when hungry for more.

Great book. It's a delight just to look at the imaginative use of the iPhone camera to create artistic images. For someone interested in the photographic medium this book opens exciting new avenues of creativity. It will definitele get your creative juices flowing.

I love being able to master these apps using these well produced videos. Even though I have many of the apps he recommends, it's great to see his demo of each one. And, I was also introduced to several new ones. Excellent!

At first I was disappointed that the author didn't go into more detail about the various apps used in the e-version of the book. But then I started watching the videos and was much more pleased.

What an excellent book! I am running a local campaign for a family member and have bought three different books from Amazon. While all three have great ideas and offer substance, I would take this one hands down if I could only have one.The specific information on precinct and voter analysis are well worth the price of the book alone.

Having worked on more campaigns than I can remember, there is no better, more useful, comprehensive and effective beginners guide to running a political campaign than this. This is the one that you will use and remember.

I absolutely love this book. When I first bought the book I had a lot of questions about campaign management. There were a lot of things my friends who were experienced in senior campaign management told me that this book confirms. I was worried that the book would be centered around a really small race, such as a mayoral race of a small city. Although, smaller races like city, county and state senate, representative races are mentioned a lot, there are a few mentions of larger statewide/federal races mentioned in the book.The one thing that I do not like about the book is is the organization of it's chapters and subchapters. That relatively minor, however.If the author could write about, in her next edition, more day to day duties as it relates to staff, this book would be the best out there! Everyone said that the job of the campaign manager is VERY time consuming and often you're helping others like press secretary, field director and others do their job, which makes sense. However, this book doesn't really give you a sense of the time commitment that it takes to be a campaign manager. Finally, I'd recommend adding subchapters for more positions for the larger statewide campaigns and an in-depth analysis of their job, seeing that the campaign manager should be very well aware of their duties in case he/she has to step in and help aid in their job.

I did a search in my confusion about how to help with my son's campaign and stumbled on this book at Amazon. It came quickly enough to be timely for me and was a real help to my planning. It is clear, easy to read and understand. I was lucky to fine it!

This book is a MUST BUY.
