Bill Inmon carries a lot of credibility in the data warehouse space, so I got this book with confidence. It's a pretty quick read as he presents a case for pausing and designing a data lake. He offers broad principles that are surely good guidelines. His frequent diagrams are simplistic, offering little enhancement to the point he's making. The last two chapters were particularly lightweight in addressing areas that deserved more substance: I also felt a bit of a sales pitch when he made a big deal of textual disambiguation. I looked up the term on Google and found the top ranking hits to be his company, Forrest Rim. He sells textual disambiguation software. So, he lost a little cred with me on that count. In short, the book provided a nice, much-needed framework for avoiding the pitfalls of data junkyards. But it came up short in actionable substance that I can begin applying.
Book focused on providing insight to BI community on Datalake. A very detailed description on concepts were provided without touching the technologies to be used for their implementations. You will be disappointed if your looking for guidance on technical implementation . Bill as usual took firm stand throught the book in explaning concepts.More number of real time examples would have added more value. On a whole its a good book and qualifies for onetime read.
I appreciate the fact that metadata was called out so prevalent. I disagree with some of the conclusions, but there’s a lot here to get you started.
This material was entirely too generic for a focused topic about architecture. The illustrations added no value to the proposed content. It is quite realistic that data across ponds would be integrated for advanced analytics, yet the author only casually observes this need. I suppose I was looking for more substance in the examples, specifically architecture.
The information provided in this book is trivial, only the references to Metadata are relevant. The images are poor. I was expecting more info from Inmon, unfortunatelly this book just don't reach the basic level. It's just a recomendation on how to plan a Data Lake, not a roadmap. Neither a technical guide to implement a Information System.
The book's title is misleading. This is not really helpful for big data architects looking to create a data lake. It may be useful for a business stake holder looking to get a basic understanding of data lake and it's potential benefits.
This only touched on the highest level of detail, no substance. Anyone looking for more understating of data lakes should not read this book, the information is not here.
The book is a good introduction and overview of how to design data lakes. It's definitely not an in-depth technical how-to book. But it's great for getting your feet wet and learning what pitfalls to watch out for. It's a quick read that can be done in a couple of days.Bill Inmon knows his stuff. I've had the chance to see him a couple of times in person and his presentations are always interesting. This book reads like one of those.
