What I love most about this book? Jeanine has taken every line of code, boxed it in, and then put an explanation for what it does in a box beside it. These are simple games like hangman and concentration, and the nice thing is that she uses the Canvas to good effect, so you learn how to draw on it as part of the process. If you're wanting to learn more about that, this book is a real gem.

I purchased this when it first came out any only today actual read the book. I skipped the chapter on Canvas for now. First, the book is a great introduction. I intend to read one or two others in the next few days. It gave me a condensed overview of the philosophy, API's, and sticky spots in HTML5 as of the date of writing (and I realize some has changed since then and a new version can be pre-ordered). I for one enjoyed the very brief humor when it reared its head -- it was not offensive or mean spirited (and I found it quite clever) so I'm not sure why the the violent reaction by some who have rated this book. To the contrary, it held my attention through would inevitably be a dry topic. I value the author's opinions -- this is not a text book. I value when they are excited or are beaten down by a particular aspect of the spec or it's current implementation. I do take a small amount of issue with how bogged down the book can become at times with some rather meaty examples (usually around long passages of JavaScript to handle some "edge case"). If you need a primer to get you up to speed of the major parts of HTML5 without a lot of hands on exercises, but filled with observations from people who seem to know what they're talking about then this book is for you. That described me -- at least, the me who needed a first pass at the topic matter. Now, on to a second and subsequent reference for more details.

As far as HTML5 goes, there really aren't a lot of good and comprehensive references to the markup specifications yet. This book serves as a good reference to the new markup tags and offers examples of how each can be used. If you're already working with HTML and are looking for a quick read through of the new tags and their purposes this is the book for you. However, it does not serve as a beginners guide to HTML. The book assumes that you're already familiar with coding in HTML and makes no attempt to teach you the basics. I don't count this as a fault against the book, but I do think it needs to be said. The authors also spend quite a bit of time talking about accessibility features (working with screenreaders and so forth). It's a good topic and worthy of a book by itself, but the amount of time they devote to it in this book seems disproportional. I'd offer the authors my advice of toning down that topic in this book and devoting another book to it instead.

This book is a concise yet a complete and practical guide to what's new in HTML 5. Each NEW feature of HTML 5 is covered, and a history of how the new standard was developed provided. There are small but complete examples and lots of references for enhanced learning.I found the book practical in that you can begin HTML 5 development after reading the book and by using the provided resources make sure it works in ALL browsers (yes even IE).I knocked off two stars because there are two missing elements to the book: source code for download and a PDF version (I would even pay a small extra fee for that option). If you want a concise but complete primer to HTML 5 this is a good book to purchase. It does assume you know something about prior versions HTML.

This is a book for beginners. Saying that, I wish more advanced books were so colorful and explained things the way this book does. It gives a good introductory grasp at HTML and CSS and I didn't get a headache from mass amounts of text on a single page. It has great pictures and good use of color to explain tags and attributes and is just really easy to pick up and put down. I can't wait for the others like this.

what I am really looking for is an html5 book which lists at least the possible values for ALL the elements (not just what's in use now) and of course, the elements, what they do. it would be a big book. but I think I and everybody else would buy it! problem is, it might have to be based on the whatwg.org HTML5 standard, which unfortunately is copyrighted and has a (very liberal) license. I was unable to use this as a reference, which is what I am looking for.

The book is written in a clear, concise manner with many examples to support the text.

Very informative.

What Is a Vertical Garden?CHAPTER 1I'd like to welcome you to a garden where vegetables, flowers, and fruit all grow, climb, and twine upward to create a beautiful landscape that saves space, requires less effort, produces high yields, and reduces pest and disease problems. Whether your goal is armloads of flowers, a bountiful vegetable garden, or a productive fruit harvest, I'll show you how narrow strips of soil, bare walls, and simple trellises and arches can be transformed into grow-up or grow-down gardens with just a few inexpensive supplies or purchased planters. I've been testing gardening methods in my own 20-acre garden at Cedaridge Farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, for 20 years, and I want you to discover the same delights and benefits of vertical gardening that I'm enjoying.Vertical gardening is an innovative, effortless, and highly productive growing system that uses bottom-up and top-down supports for a wide variety of plants in both small and large garden spaces. There are hundreds of varieties of vegetables, fruits, and flowers that are perfect for growing up freestanding and wall-mounted supports and in beds or containers.Best of all, vertical gardening guarantees a better result from the day your trowel hits your soil--by shrinking the amount of garden space needed and reducing the work needed to prepare new beds. Chores like weeding, watering, fertilizing, and controlling pests and diseases are reduced considerably, while yields are increased, especially with vegetables like beans and tomatoes. A vining pole bean will outyield a bush bean tenfold. Moreover, a vining vegetable is capable of continuous yields--the more you pick, the more the plant forms new flowers and fruit to prolong the harvest. A bush variety, by contrast, will exhaust itself within 2 to 3 weeks.A Japanese wisteria vine twines upward through the canopy of this small- scale replica of Monet's bridge. The long flower clusters offer an intimate and fragrant resting spot while viewing the water garden at Cedaridge Farm. With vertical gardening methods, you'll also discover that many ground- level plants pair beautifully with climbing plants, so you can combine different types of plants to create a lush curtain of flowers, foliage, and bounty. With a mix of do-it-yourself and commercially available string supports, trellises, pergolas, raised beds, Skyscraper Garden trellises, and Topsy-Turvy planters, vertical gardening saves a lot of time and work, lessens backbreaking tasks, makes harvesting easier, and is perfect for any size space, from a patio container and a 1 x 4-foot strip of soil to a landscape trellis and the entire side of a building.LAYING THE GROUNDWORKI first encountered a successful no-dig garden at the Good Gardeners Association in Hertfordshire, England. I visited the home of the group's founder, the late Dr. W. E. Shewell-Cooper, in 1970, when I went to interview him for an article in Horticulture magazine. On my return to the United States, I also discovered The Ruth Stout No-Work Garden Book, which was one of the first books that advocated a system of no-dig gardening through in situ (in place) composting. Stout explained how she created planting beds by putting down newspapers to suffocate existing weeds and grass; piling on layers of organic waste, such as spoiled hay and kitchen scraps, as mulch to decompose; and then planting directly into this compost. This system of gardening has appealed to many people during the past 40 years, even though its focus has been gardening horizontally. Many no-dig plots based on Ruth Stout's book have been established in public demonstration gardens, including one maintained by the ECHO Foundation (Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization) near Fort Myers, Florida. The foundation began its first no-dig garden in 1981, which remained in continuous production for years as a vegetable garden in the middle of what had been a lawn. It was never plowed, cultivated, spaded, or hoed. Around the same time, engineer-turned-author Mel Bartholomew introduced his own concept in his book Square Foot Gardening, which promoted raised beds and intensively planted crops that allowed gardeners to grow more in less space. Mel has convinced millions of gardeners around the world to switch to easy no-dig raised beds. And then along came Patricia Lanza with her blockbuster book Lasagna Gardening. After struggling to amend the soil in her gardens, she, too, realized that layering compostable ingredients was the best way to start new garden beds, and she's been growing flowers, vegetables, and herbs for years in her "lasagna" layers. For the past couple of decades, I've studied, tried, and implemented gardening systems that produce better results in less space with less work. Many no-dig methods were developed specifically for gardening horizontally, but I've found that these same no-dig techniques are even better suited to vertical gardening. With vertical gardening, plants require much less space than plants that grow horizontally, so those same layering techniques are even more efficient when used in conjunction with the small-footprint beds I recommend. While most no-dig systems suggest that a 6-inch depth of fertile soil is adequate, I prefer a soil depth of 6 to 12 inches in a raised planting bed, because vining plants generally have more vigorous root systems than dwarf plants or plants grown horizontally. Plants grown in 6 to 12 inches of fertile soil respond magnificently to that extra soil depth by delivering maximum yields.THE BENEFITS OF GROWING VERTICALLYIf you've gardened in long, horizontal beds for even a single growing season, you've probably thought to yourself, "There has to be a better way." Well, you're right--there is a better way. Vertical gardening offers many advantages over horizontal growing.Smaller beds to prepare and maintain. When growing plants with a vertical habit, you'll need a bed only as large as the root systems of those plants-- one that's much smaller than a traditional bed. When you plant horizontally, you tend to have narrow rows of plants and wide swaths of soil between them. It's those wide swaths that drink up much of the water, send up innumerable weeds, and consume the nutrients needed by your plants. With vertical gardening, you prepare only small spots or strips of fertile soil--just enough to give plants a nutritious base from which to climb up supports. These vertical garden beds require less compost, fertilizer, and water, and only a few bucketfuls of mulch or a little black plastic to control weeds. Compost goes further when you cut back on bed space, so you won't need to buy, generate, or use as much compost in order to amend your soil each season. And whether you plan to water with a watering can or use a drip irrigation system, you'll find that watering your small plots of soil is a cinch, and your drip hose can be short.A simple vertical garden is perfect for a paved or soil surface, 2 feet wide x 4 feet long, with room for four vining plants such as a tomato, cucumber, climbing spinach, and pole bean.I'm an advocate of no-dig beds, because I've seen the results others have achieved, in addition to my own successes. You can easily create a no-dig bed by spreading homemade or store-bought compost onto bare soil--or onto a layer of newspapers to kill surface weeds or turfgrass--and leveling the new bed with a rake. Spreading compostable layers on top of your newspaper weed barrier will create a fluffy, nutrient-rich planting bed (the method called in situ or sheet composting). To compost in situ, I make sure my newspaper layer is at least 15 pages thick and that the edges overlap like the scales of a fish. This excludes light from the ground beneath, killing grass and weeds. On top of this, I generally place a 6-inch layer of grass clippings, a 6-inch layer of shredded leaves (I use a lawn mower to shred them), and then a layer of kitchen waste (often including banana peels, eggshells, fish bones, and potato skins). This stack is then topped off by a 1/2-inch layer of wood ashes. Other good composting ingredients include well-rotted animal manure (like cow and horse), sawdust, shredded newspapers, pine needles, and hay. Hold the sides of this in-situ compost bed in place with boards, landscape ties, or even stones or bricks.Skyscraper structures can be assembled above a raised bed to create a freestanding unit, ready for edible vines such as pole beans and indeterminate tomatoes or flowering vines such as morning glories and climbing nasturtiums.Do-it-yourself supports and trellises. While vertical gardening depends on a variety of supports and trellises, you'll find that it's easy to make your own. I make many of my own trellises from bamboo canes that I grow myself, or from pencil-straight pussy willow stems. It's simple to take canes or willow stakes and space them 1 foot apart to make posts, and use thinner, more pliable canes threaded through them horizontally to make strong, good-looking trellises. You'll see lots of examples of homemade trellises in the photographs in this book. Of course, ready-made trellises are available from garden centers, large hardware stores, and even big-box discount stores. Sturdy metal ones are suited for heavier vines, like melons and winter squash. In this book, you'll also discover the Skyscraper Garden trellis, a post-and-netting support I designed specifically for growing vegetables and flowers vertically. Skyscraper Garden trellises can be freestanding or wall-mounted and can be grouped in raised beds to create an efficient, highly productive, and attractive gardening space. At Cedaridge Farm, I've created long raised beds and use Skyscraper Garden trellises to support vining crops above low-growing foundation vegetables and herbs.Vertical pots and containers for very small spaces. If you don't have any (or much) garden space--say, just a concrete patio or a balcony--or if you can't easily amend your soil or build a raised bed, then consider using tower pots or other containers that help you grow upward in a column. Tower pots are commercial containers that stack one on top of the other and enable you to grow vertically a variety of plants that don't vine (such as lettuce, peppers, and strawberries). Plus, you can easily add trellises and supports within containers or "planted" just behind containers to create a vertical garden in a limited space. And if you need to be really creative with garden space, try mounting containers at various heights on a fence or wall to create a visual vertical garden.New plant varieties to explore. The choices of climbing plants may surprise you. Among the vegetables, try growing climbing spinach (it's heat resistant and tastes even better than the regular cool season spinach), trellis-loving snap peas with edible pods, and the fabulous climbing 'Trombone' zucchini that produces a vine 10 feet tall and loaded with fruits. All of these grow up, not out. Vining cucumbers, single-serving vining melons, and even sweet potato vines are all suitable for growing upward, instead of sprawling outward across the ground and consuming more space than you can easily care for during the season. And if you've ever grown vegetable spaghetti (also known as spaghetti squash) in a traditional garden, try growing it up a trellis instead: Allowed to grow across the ground, vegetable spaghetti is an aggressive vine that will suffocate anything in its path; but when it's grown up a trellis, it shoots skyward with tendrils that grasp latticework or garden netting, producing up to a dozen fruit on a vine.On this shady fence, wooden buckets are mounted at various heights with strong metal brackets and feature lush plantings of fuchsia and impatiens for an appealing vertical flower garden. You may even find that vertically grown vegetables taste better. Bear in mind that all that vine foliage collects more chlorophyll than a bush variety of the same vegetable, and this may help to promote better flavor. It is said that the French Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir had such a refined taste for good food (his wife, Aline, earned a reputation as one of the finest cooks in France) that he could tell the difference between snap beans grown on poles and those grown on dwarf, bushy plants, because to him the vertically grown beans had superior flavor. Based on my own experience, I agree with him! Of course, the king of vegetables--the tomato--benefits from growing vertically, especially those varieties classified as indeterminate (with vines that can reach 20 feet or more) in seed catalogs and on plant labels. When you look at world-record harvests for tomatoes, all of the winning plants were staked to grow vertically, with some growing more than 25 feet high, producing hundreds of fruit from early summer to fall frost. You can try many new plant varieties in your vertical garden. Using a strong trellis or a bamboo support and heavy-gauge garden netting, experiment with the edible gourd 'Cuccuzi'; long, straight fruits develop when the fruit is allowed to hang. One of the bigger benefits of vertical gardening is being able to grow many different fruits against a wall or along wires or a split-rail fence. Of course, vining fruits like grapes and hardy kiwifruit are ideal, but so are berry crops with long, flexible canes like blackberries and raspberries. Even fruit trees with strong, sturdy trunks have pliable side branches that can be trained to grow flat for long distances against a wall or fence. This practice, known as espalier, significantly reduces the amount of space needed for a generous harvest of apples, peaches, pears, and other orchard trees--and reducing the growing space footprint is one of the tenets of vertical gardening. Be aware that many fruit trees are sold in standard, semi-dwarf, and dwarf sizes, referring to the mature height of the tree. For espalier in a home garden, the semi-dwarf and dwarf are most suitable, producing full-size fruit regardless of the extent of dwarfing.Flowering vines also tend to be everblooming and provide armloads of flowers for cutting. Sweet peas, nasturtiums, and morning glories will produce curtains of color planted in a short row to climb up garden netting (either attached to a sunny wall or strung between posts as a freestanding trellis). Grow all three together for an incredible kaleidoscope of color. Then explore the dozens of other choices of upwardly mobile and cascading flowers and vines to create a garden that's filled with interesting "living walls," dividers, and curtains of foliage. See the two chapters on flowering ornamental vines (annual vines as well as the perennial and woody vines). This small-space, nonstop vertical garden is created by positioning a Skyscraper Garden trellis in a 12-inch-deep raised planter box, with a 6- inch-deep planter box on each side. Look at how productive a vertical garden can be! Four varieties of climbing vegetables (such as cucumbers, pole snap beans, tomatoes, and vegetable spaghetti) are growing on both sides of the garden netting in the deep bed, and non-vining foundation plants (such as bell peppers, herbs, and lettuces) are thriving in the shallower beds.

#27,768 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought this book to use with my square food gardening book. It is filled with great tips, and ideas for how to raise garden crops using the vertical method. It is a different way to garden if you have never done this before, but it really works. If you don't have much room and you want to get the best bang for your buck, this book is one you should have. I highly recommend it.

I've bought a few books lately, all in the gardening section. I looked for the highest ratings, but verified the ratings by reading the reviews, both good & bad. Well, I was looking for a book to give more ideas for Vertical Gardening. I already garden, have many different plants.. vegetables, fruits, flowers and fruit trees. I'm looking to utilize more vertical space, so I have more room to grow more.I have only a few sections in my yard where I have a good amount of unobstructed sun, perfect for food growing. My trees are all in containers for now, so that I can continue to shuffle things around, trying to have everyone happy. I'm getting rid of many of the decorative plants that hardly contribute to the pollinators as well. This book goes into Vertical Gardening but I found a good part of it for decorative purposes... covering cabins, trees (which I don't agree with, I think the Ivy chokes them), gazebos or walls. This type of gardening is not very appealing to me. For one, I don't have the land for it. Secondly, I prefer gardening for food and planting for the beneficial insects as well. I get pleasure from the great scents and the beauty of butterflies or bees buzzing all around. The other thing I didn't like about the book, most of the pages have no color. There is a small section with glossy, colorful photos, but they were more for the decorative vines, walls, & fountain views. Maybe about 20 pages worthof colorful photos... out of the 300+ pages. The rest of the pages are Black, White, & Green, however, there were tons of black & white photos throughout... I just wish they were in color to be able to see the detail better, or the colors of the foliage & flowers, there would be a more visible contrast with the trellis or whatever structure they were making an example of. I just think it would make the book a tad more helpful in color. The author does touch on the food that is "growable" vertically, such as mini melons, pumpkins, squash... he lists some growing facts like planting season, typical days to maturity, zones best grown in and the general length or height to expect. That's helpful, so you can plan for specific spacing and avoid over crowding. The book also goes into espalier growing, which is also vertical, but they're trees, again, that's not the area I was looking for ideas on.I don't know. I can't say the book wasn't helpful at all, but it wasn't as helpful as I expected either. I'm keeping it and utilize what I can out of it.

I recommend this book for everyone! Whether you only have space for containers on a patio, a 12 inch space against a south, east, or west wall, or a garden plot with rows and rows, you can benefit from the information in this book. Did you know that you can grow 10 times more green beans when growing a pole snap bean than when growing a bush bean?I grew my first garden this past summer at my new residence, but the garden space wasn't enough for what I have plans to grow. My hubby said we can't make a bigger plot, so I am thrilled while reading this book, realizing that many of my space problems can be easily solved with a little effort and cost. Cost depends on our choices of the materials that we use and I intend to grow bamboo for many of my structures. The author explains various types of bamboo that he likes for best appearance.Other added benefits are the saving of water while growing a lot more of whatever you want to grow, less work of weeding, no more back breaking work picking green beans and such low to the ground, easier pest control, better flavor of produce...and so much more. You can grow in an 8 square foot vertical space what you would normally grow in a 24 square foot horizontal space. My husband says that food taste better when vertical growing and Derek Fell explains that the plants contain more Chlorophyll, which improves the taste of the plants. He also shares how to grow tomatoes on top of the ground and potatoes directly underneath in the tomato root system. This book contains information of how to use various items to build your structures to grow up and not out, which plants produce an abundance supply, and tidbits of wisdom from years of experience and experimentation are sprinkled throughout. My mother gave me an advertisment that she received concerning this book and I am so glad that she did! It's going to prove invaluable to me!

Vertical Gardening proved to a most interesting book. The author discussed many ways to grow plants at eye level and above for a variety of locations and income levels. There are helpful suggestions for dealing with problems such as diseases and insect, controlling weeds and otherwise keeping plants healthy. Different sections deal with food producing plants, flowering vines and others best known for their foliage. Color photos in the book were high quality and attractive. While the book is inexpensive, I feel it is well worthy owning.

I sometimes am limited to space when gardening. I was amazed at how many things can grow vertically. This book is very educational and I am glad that I purchased it to add to my collection.

LOVE THIS!!!!! I am combining several ideas in gardening since I have very limited sunlight due to trees. I am even growing a vertical garden in an old cooler on my patio. I can pull it up close to the house if bad weather is coming or out of the way if bbq-ing. It seems easier to keep the animals off, is a little better to see what is growing, can watch for bugs better, seems like it will be easier to harvest and save my back from bending over so far. I have even incorporated an old metal box springs off my grandmothers bed. I place next to the fence and used t-post and straps to hold upright. On the top I planted flowers in pots. I have tied my beans and squash with different colored yarn to keep them growing in there own spot and have stick pinwheels in the sides and shny things in the trees close by. This does seem to be helping with the birds. I didn't mind at first but then the birds started pecking at the produce. Lots of great Ideas!!!!!

I buy a lot of books but rarely take the time to write a review because I hate typing on my iPad. This cook book is worth my typing irritation. I am a busy mom who is trying to eat less processed foods. I would not consider myself an accomplished cook. I need easy and reasonably quick to put together meals. These recipes are simple and the flavors in the dishes are great. At first when a recipe referenced another I mentally groaned. Sub referencing has never gone well for me. It was easy. I would recommend mixing up the Mexican spice and I think it was Tuscan Italian spice combinations and just keeping them on hand in a empty jar that you have saved. That is one of the sub references that has shown up often in the recipes that I have tried. The Greek pasta and the bourbon meatballs are on deck to try for this week. I have bought a lot of cookbooks hoping that my meals would improve. I have had limited success until now. I highly recommend this cookbook. Enjoy.

This is the cookbook for u only if u like to feed ur loved ones cups of heavy cream & grated cheese. Example: lasagna recipe calls for 5 cups cheese & 32 ounces ricotta chz as well!!!!!!!!!!Mac & cheese recipe:1/2 stick butter, 1/2 block cream chz, 3 cups whole milk, 1/2 C heavy cream, AND 3 cups cheese. Really???????Even a linguine & chkn recipe calls for 2 cups 1/2 & 1/2 & 1 C chz.Garlic shrimp recipe- 1 stick butter & heavy cream. To the authors Don & Chad: PLEASE come out with healthful recipes to nourish our bodies AND taste good- I’d buy your book in a second.Gorgeous photos of every recipe. It’s a beautiful book- I just can’t eat such rich foods, it’s a turn off & I don’t want to shape & mold my kids tastebuds like that, no way- I love my family too much.

I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but after flipping through the book there was only one recipe that I don't think we'd eat, and I have a fairly picky family. instructions are clear and there are lots of beautiful pictures to go off of.

I have all Donna's recipes via her website, blog, etc. I just had to buy this book and I'm not disappointed! The only negative I have would be that I have some of these recipes that have already been published elsewhere, but very few, most are new and I've been following her for six years.

When I found a recipe on line, it mentioned that is came from this book. I thought it would be worth taking a look. I bought the Kindle version and was immediately thrilled with the recipes I was seeing. On the way home that evening, I stopped to get the necessary ingredients to make the Tex-Mex Pasta and Sausage. It was just as easy as the book said. Dinner was ready in about 20 minutes and it was delicious. This weekend, I’m going to try the Breakfast Bombs. They should meet my family’s needs and more! It’s unusual to find a cookbook filled with easy/simple recipes that have any flavor or eye appeal. This one meets both criteria. I love it.

Bought 2 one for myself... made a few of the recipes and got the other for my son's family.. Easy recipes, good instructions, and delicious food..

I love this book! It has helped me learn to enjoy cooking. The meals I have made using the recipes from this book have had flavor that I didn’t know I could create, and they have been delicious! I like how the authors are down to earth in their explanations and give helpful tips with each recipe. The recipes are pretty easy and the ingredients aren’t fancy but wow, what flavor!I will admit that Initially I was concerned about making the spice blends recommended. Figured I’d make them up, get discouraged, and waste them. I was wrong. The magic of the flavor is in the spice blends!I have been following the recipes as written, and not a single one has been a disappointment. It’s a game changer. I actually want to have people over for dinner because I can finally make meals that are delicious! Oh and if you eat meat and want to start with easy winners I suggest trying the Pot Roast or the Farmers Market Sausage with Pasta. Both are excellent, easy and inexpensive.

I really love this cookbook. Especially the section on making your own seasoning blends. I've tried them on many things and they are delicious. The first meal I tried was the Italian baked meatballs...oh so good. I made extra and put them in the freezer for later. With the meatballs I made the Herb-Roasted Italian vegetables. Wow...really good.! I also love that are simple tips on saving time as I tend to prep one day and then cook the rest.

Review

"The fourth edition keeps up an excellent tradition of providing students, researchers, and clinicians with a text that is unrivaled in its breadth and depth. This edition reflects the ever-increasing translation of neuroscience into new and revised theories and measures, and emphasizes new applied aspects of intellectual assessment. Clinicians will appreciate this outstanding reference work written and edited by the field's best experts."--Elaine Fletcher-Janzen, EdD, NCSP, ABPdN, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology "This revised and expanded fourth edition brings together dozens of the most well-known theorists and test authors in the field of intellectual assessment to dig deep into contemporary and ever-evolving theories of human cognition and neuropsychology. Not only are the latest cognitive, achievement, and neuropsychological tests reviewed in thorough detail, but ways to link assessment to intervention are outlined. Assessment applications for specific populations are highlighted in detail. Trainers in the applied psychological professions will likely find this a reliable core text. As an applied practitioner, I suspect this volume will become a constantly used and worn reference for report writing that will stay on my desk, not my bookshelf."--John M. Garruto, DEd, NCSP, school psychologist, Oswego City School District, New York "This is the volume on cognitive assessment. The fourth edition wonderfully captures the field's changing legislative policies, diagnostic systems, testing standards, research, theories, and controversies. A who's who of scholars eloquently provide highly practical, scientifically based information. The volume describes the latest tests as well as state-of-the-art approaches to score interpretation, decision making and intervention planning, including applications for multi-tiered systems of support in schools. This is a 'must-read' text for students of cognitive assessment, theories of intelligence, and applications of measurement, as well as practicing school, educational, and clinical psychologists and educators. Highly recommended!"--Linda A. Reddy, PhD, Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey "Flanagan and McDonough have assembled an impressive, comprehensive volume. The book includes the major scholars within the field across a continuum of expertise. It will no doubt serve as an excellent resource for those who want to assess intelligence in clinical or educational settings or analyze the psychometric properties of commonly used measures. A 'go-to' guide for understanding intellectual assessment."--H. Lee Swanson, PhD, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Educational Psychology, University of California, Riverside; Research Professor, University of New Mexico "This is a remarkably content-rich book on intellectual assessment broadly defined. Thirty-nine chapters--written by the best and brightest--trace the historical roots of test development and interpretation; explain the theoretical models that fuel such activity; and describe specific intelligence, cognitive, and neuropsychological batteries, their validity for use with children and youth, and how the data they generate may inform intervention development. As one who develops academic interventions for children with serious learning problems, I found the book helpful for thinking about individual differences in cognition and how they may influence construction of training programs to strengthen both cognitive processes and academic skills."--Douglas Fuchs, PhD, Professor and Nicholas Hobbs Chair of Special Education and Human Development, Vanderbilt University "The fourth edition offers insight into how cognitive processes can affect academic achievement and other meaningful outcomes, and how processing strengths and weaknesses can be used to identify different disorders, including specific learning disabilities. Taking the reader on a journey from theory to practice, this is perhaps the most comprehensive resource to date. The inclusion of the top theorists and researchers in cognition and academic achievement makes the fourth edition the 'go-to' book on cognitive and intellectual assessment for both identification and intervention purposes. Elucidating the cognitive processes involved in learning and behavior, this innovative work will be valued by graduate students, experienced clinical and school-based psychologists, and educators alike."--James B. Hale, PhD, ABPdN, Professor of Educational Neuroscience (retired), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore“This excellent book collects research findings about some of the most popular cognitive tests in the field today. It should be in the libraries of psychometricians and researchers alike. This fourth edition has many updated chapters as well as information on new testing instruments. *****!” (Doody's Review Service 2019-02-15)"A superb theoretical and clinical overview....One could not ask for more from a review and critical evaluation of this extensive, rich, and complex literature." (on the second edition) (PsycCRITIQUES 2006-02-02)"Should be required reading in all intelligence testing courses and by anyone involved in the assessment of human and cognitive abilities." (on the first edition) (Psychotherapy in Private Practice 1998-01-01)“A valuable resource for neuropsychologists conducting comprehensive evaluations. Furthermore, the book's scope, depth, and clarity will be useful to seasoned as well as more junior practitioners and graduate students….Provides a comprehensive and empirically grounded account of intelligence theory and assessment….The editors’ attention to the needs of their target audience is apparent and will go a long way in securing this book as an oft-used reference in one's clinical practice and theoretical understanding of contemporary intellectual assessment.” (on the third edition) (Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology 2013-08-01)

This is a textbook so it will obviously be mostly used for school and studying purposes. However, the book isn't formatted correctly which makes it nearly impossible to study from it. All the pages are the same number so you can't reference back to the page you made notes on or where you found important information, you just have to flip through the endless pages and hope you find the information you're looking for. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PURCHASE...TOTALLY NOT WORTH THE EXUBERANT PRICE!!

What a rich and marvelous state-of-the-science jewel. From Schneider & Mcgrew’s most recent re-analysis of crucial CHC factors that will help new and seasoned clinicians improve their test interpretive skills to Kilpatrick’s chapter that brings our understanding of specific learning disability diagnoses firmly into the 21st century, this is a must read for those committed to improving their knowledge and skills in applied intellectual and learning assesment.

I just love having Thomas Sowell's reasoned opinions at my fingertips, mostly because I think he is an enormous gift to America (and the world). He brings together a huge number of disparate threads, all the way from (1) why we talk so freely about sex, but so guardedly about love, and (2) the meaninglessness of the word "equality" in any politician's mouth, all the way to the general meaninglessness of the word "relevance," especially in education.I like this book because I agree with it. There are dozens of small, easy-to-digest essays and I find myself nodding my head when I read them. Sometimes there is a subtle bite to his thought, which I also agree with. For example (paraphrasing): "No matter how egalitarian our speech may be, it remains true that women in general make very bad men, and men cannot be women at all."A fantastic compendium.

This is a collection of short articles that Dr. Sowell wrote, I believe for publication in various news media. The essays are well worth reading and cover a myriad of important issues including race, social and political issues, and ethics. I doubt, though, that anyone under age 50 or so will be able to identify with some of the ideas, given the current thorough indoctrination of the young against conservative ideas (which, curiously, is viewed as teaching "tolerance").

Everybody needs to read Sowell! He has so much to say that is logical and well researched and well thought out. He doesn't waste a single word and supports all that is said. He'll give you a different spin on a lot of concepts that the media takes for granted, give you the opportunity to step outside of the tide of all the one sided opinions we are assaulted with on a day to day basis. He is respectful of historical figures , offering some essays on people from Marx to George Washington Carver. He doesn't care what color someone's skin is and will criticize other blacks and praise non-blacks , or vice versa if it's fair, but he does so on merit rather than race. He seems very capitalist and encourages a free market, and he should know what he's talking about given his credentials and hard work ethic. His essays and ideas are a breath of fresh air in the smog infested tangled logic air of those with the blow horn nowadays.

Yes, it is a reprint of many other articles and essays, but they are some of the master's favorites. If you do not have other Sowell books which might be redundant, this one will be delightful. He is a brilliant man. Wish he were president!

This book contains selections from the following:1. The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy2. The Quest for Cosmic Justice3. A Personal Odyssey4. Applied Economics: Thinking Beyond Stage One5. Affirmative Action Around the World: An Empirical Study (Yale Nota Bene)6. Marxism: Philosophy and Economics7. Basic Economics: A Common Sense Guide to the Economy8. Migrations And Cultures: A World View/Conquests And Cultures: An International History9. On Classical Economics10.Intellectuals and Society: Revised and Expanded EditionI've read all the aforementioned books of his (and then some). Some of the ("The Vision of the Anointed") were not his best work, and by putting them into this reader he took the best parts of what was the lesser among his vast catalogue of books. Migrations and Cultures was a book in which he talked about the geographic disadvantages of Africa as an explanation of why it remained poor. It happened that Jared Diamond came along a few years later and wrote a much better book about that same topic (Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies), but Sowell still did have some good things to say about it. But enough to occupy, say, 20 pages and not a whole book.Whom might this book be for? I can see this as being good as a gift for people who have not read Sowell's work before and need an introduction thereto. It could also be for people who have a short attention span and who could use a bit of information on just what is "judicial activism" (but don't want to fish through a 500 page book for a definition of it). Sowell does it about 14 pages with emphasis on the often-overstretched-beyond-recognition Interstate Commerce Law. There's lots and lots of food for thought here.Of the essays, one problem that I did have was that he didn't update "The Pattern of the Anointed" (which was excerpted from "Vision of the Anointed") to reflect Obama's stimulus. Sowell is such a prolific writer and has so many research assistants, that it would have been a single afternoon's work to add on a couple of pages about: 1) What the "crisis" was; 2) What the stimulus was supposed to do; 3) What it actually did; 4) How the goalposts were retrospectively moved.A lot of these chapters are 2 single pages (articles that are taken from syndicated columns of Sowell's) and that you might have caught from reading his work on a semi-weekly basis. For people who are his fans, this book serves the purpose of having a lot of his best arguments in one place and easily reachable. (I sell books after I finish reading, and so I don't have any of the titles that I have read handy.) The articles are good to read over lunch breaks or between classes. And the book can be read out of order.I don't regret this purchase. It was just about worth the new purchase price and is definitely worth the used purchase price as a gift.

Broought and read because Mattis read it. I found it a bit long in the tooth and was a bit disappointed.

A man rambles long enough to justify a “full” book- In reality the same theory is repeated over and overBottom line - Strategy is the way to accomplish political goals - it has been that way in the past and nothing will change - that’s the whole bookI am not sure why General Mattis includes this on his reading list - it is def one of the weaker recommndations

Essential only to understand the broader thoughts of Gray. Leaves ample space for further debate on strategy and its implications.

Boring. Sounds like the author has s phD in philosophy.

Other book could tell a better interpretation of this important topicand so i return the book

easy read!

Gave this to our daughter who was headed off to college. She really loved the book and we enjoyed hearing about the options. Not all of them are for everyone but it's a great start and a reminder that you only live once.

Great book for any college student or student preparing for college.

Liked the title for my college aged grandchildren; however, the 77 things aren't very good. More of a joke gift. Arrived on time

As a college student, I find this book highly relatable to me. Given the title, I expected a fun, goofy book that lists a bunch of random things that one should do in college and was looking to find a couple of outrageous things to do before I graduate. To a certain extent, it does deliver that, but it's also so much more.77 Things (the college ed.) is divided into seven sections with eleven suggestions each. The sections are as follow: (1) Around the pad [aka. your room / home], (2) Getting Out and About on Your Own, (3) Taking Advantage of School, (4) Being Social, (5) Body and Health, (6) Spoil Yourself, (7) For the Future. As you can see from this list, it isn't just about going out and doing something outrageous and memorable before you enter the "real world." While it does encourage us to put ourselves out there and try new things, it also reminds us to take care of our health and to also look for opportunities to further our future. For example, it suggests taking a physical. This in particular stood out to me because I can't remember the last time I went to the doctor for a regular checkup. Things like this are more easily remembered for children when we need to get shots all the time, but as we get older we forget to do things like this. Nowadays, I usually just go to the doctor when I have an immediate problem. This book reminded me that sometimes we need to take steps to ensure problems do not happen in the first place—or at least to catch them in the early stages.Other suggestions include ways of getting to know people and also exploiting your college's resources. Among other things that you may not have thought about. I recommend this book as a great resouce for students with ideas on what to do while they're in college, and I strongly recommend trying them out. This is a book that I could have used my freshman year when I didn't yet know how to take full advantage of what college life had to offer me.

For many young adults, being in college is the first time they get to try out being on their own. And while partying may be the first thing that pops into your mind when you think about older teens branching out, author Halley Bondy thinks there is much more to consider: 77 things to be precise. Her guide, 77 Things You Absolutely Have to Do Before You Finish College is a thoughtful look at the whole experience of going to college and the benefits you can get outside of the education you receive there.Recommendations are divided into seven categories that address dorm rooms/apartments, getting around on your own, getting the most out of school, being social, taking care of your health, spoiling yourself, and preparing for getting out of college. Each idea is presented on a two-page spread, so it’s easy to pick up the book and focus on one or two ideas at a time. Many tips are practical, like “Learn to prepare one meal perfectly.” Others are meant to help students branch out to things they may not normally do, like “Join an a capella group.” or “Contribute to the school paper.” Some, like “Get a massage,” are just fun.Bondy’s tone is light and conversational and her suggestions are peppered with pull-out quotes and relevant sidebars, like a lesson on how to set a table and a list of signs to help you tell a bad friend from an abusive friend. All in all, 77 Things makes for a great guide to pack along in your suitcase whether you are a freshman starting out or a student returning for another year. It makes a great gift too.The publisher gave me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

77 Things You Absolutely Have To Do Before You Finish Collegeby Halley BondyZest Books2014191 pages, with resourcesISBN: 9781936976003Informative and insightful, this book will give college bound grads some ideas what their future will be like. The book is divided into seven sections: Around the Pad (dorm room or apartment), Getting Out and About On Your Own, Taking Advantage of School, Being Social, Body and Health, Spoil Yourself, and For the Future.Renting an apartment for the first time is a scary adventure. The author warns readers to take an experienced person with you--someone who has rented or bought property before (like a parent, older sibling or friend) will know what questions to ask, will point out faults and weaknesses of the property and its condition, and will be able to "translate" the lease agreement. This is sage advice even for young people who think they know everything. As a licensed realtor myself, I see how some apartment managers/property management companies can take advantage of the young, the inexperienced, the naïve, or the just plain ignorant lessee.Other entries are creating a photo collection, joining a political campaign, joining a college group, eating all alone at a restaurant, trying some weird kind of food like squid ink pasta and volunteering at a shelter. "Learn Self Defense" does not show up until mid-book, but I think it should have been the #1 entry. College age students, primarily girls, should be aware of national statistics and take pro-active steps to avoid dangerous situations According to a report from the CDC, "In a study of undergraduate women, 19% experienced attempted or completed sexual assault since entering college." That is a staggering number! At my daughter's university, incoming freshmen and transfer students are given a lecture by campus police at orientation. The police warn to walk in groups and there is an app to contact campus security. The all call system warns students of dangerous situations such as a campus lock down or severe weather. This book is the ideal going away gift for high school seniors and graduates. Although the cover is underwhelming to say the least, the information is valuable and well-organized. The cover should have been more colorful, maybe with a collage of college (haha, see what I did there?) symbols--a few mascots (made up ones, of course so the publisher does not have to pay for them), car keys, textbooks and a bill from the book store for over $1000 for just 3 textbooks, a microscope, pom poms, a football field, and a bowl of ramen--the staple of dorm rooms worldwide!Recommended for any high school senior--either going away to college or commuting.See all my YA reviews at "Young Adult Books--What We're Reading Now"FTC Required Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher.
